One solution to this problem is construction of lagoons to contain these wastes. The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, working with EPA and the NRCS has worked with farmers to design and construct over 150 lagoons at dairy farms on the north shore. Water quality improvements have resulted. A great side benefit of these lagoon systems is that the animal wastes can eventually be used for fertilizer, saving money for the farmer that would otherwise be spent on chemical fertilizers.
