URBAN RUNOFF
Urban runoff is the single largest source of pollution along Lake Pontchartrain's south shore. It is also becoming a problem on the lake's rapidly developing north shore.
This satellite image shows the extent of urban expansion on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain. The areas depicted in white are the City of New Orleans and Jefferson Parish. Both are surrounded by levees. All stormwater (i.e. rain) must be pumped out of the levee system, and into Lake Pontchartrain, to prevent flooding. |
