Table 1A-Measurements from debris-flow source areas in Madison County, VA. Sample locations (ID) are shown on Plate 1.
Thickness (THICK ), width, and length refer to measurements of initial landslide made at debris-flow source area. MATERIAL refers
to type of geologic material involved in initial sliding which mobilized into debris flow: C-colluvium, S-saprolite, R-bedrock, D-debris,
or combination of the above. ROCK? (Y/N) refers as to whether bedrock served either as the surface of sliding or a permeability
barrier. HOLLOW? (Y/N) indicates whether the source area was located in a noticeable topographic depression. SHAPE denotes
whether the failure surface of the initial landslide was planar (P) or rotational (R). MULTIPLE (Y/N) indicates whether multiple
landslides initiated in close proximity. Measurements identified (ID) by initial and number (e.g. W-1a) recorded by Gerald Wieczorek
(W), Randy Orndorff (O), Bill Burton (B), Benjamin Morgan (M), and Giuseppe Mandrone (G).
