UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Version 1.0 of NUREVIEW for Windows - A program for viewing aerial gamma-ray profile data Joseph S. Duval1 ** Open-File Report 97-78 This report is preliminary and has not been reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. No guarantee are made regarding the usability or accuracy of the computer program presented in this report INTRODUCTION The program NUREVIEW is a simple program for viewing aerial gamma-ray profile data from the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) Program of the Department of Energy. The NURE Program obtained aerial gamma-ray surveys which include data for most of the conterminous United States and Alaska. Most of these data were organized into data sets according to quadrangles defined by the 1:250,000 scale maps of the National Topographic Mapping Series of the U.S. Geological Survey. This computer program allows the user to display any one of a number of images of data for the conterminous United States and to select a quadrangle for which the flight lines may be plotted on the image. The user can also select a specific flight line and plot the profile data for that line. NUREVIEW is designed to be compatible with the data published by Duval (1995). INSTALLATION In order to successfully install NUREVIEW, you need to be familiar with the Windows operating system for personal computers. The disk provided with this Open-File Report contains two self- extracting archives named NUREVIEW.EXE and MFC250.EXE. The NUREVIEW.EXE archive contains the NUREVIEW program and its associated help file and the MFC250.EXE archive contains the dynamically linked library required by the program. The program NUREVIEW is designed to run under Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher. In order to install this program, you will need to check for the existence of the library named MFC250D.DLL under the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If this library does not exist, you need to do the following: 1. return to the MS-DOS prompt, 2. change the current directory to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM using the DOS command "CD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM, 3. run the command "A:\MFC250D where "A" is assumed to be the drive letter for your floppy disk drive. This will place a copy of the file MFC250D.DLL in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. We recommend that you then do the following: 1. if the directory C:\USGS does not exist, create it using the DOS command "MKDIR C:\USGS", 2. change the current directory to C:\USGS using the DOS command "CD C:\USGS", 3. run the command "A:\NUREVIEW" where "A" is assumed to be the drive letter for your floppy disk drive. This will place copies of the files NUREVIEW.EXE and NUREVIEW.HLP in the C:\USGS directory. If you are using Windows 3.x, we recommend that you do the following: If the program group USGS does not exist, then 1. select the File option of the main menu of Program Manager, 2. select the New option from the File drop-down menu, 3. select Program Group and click on OK, 4. select the Description text box and enter "USGS" and click on OK, Add the NUREVIEW program to the program group. 1. make sure the program group USGS is active by clicking within the program group window, 2. select the File option of the main menu of Program Manager, 3. select the New option from the File drop-down menu, 4. select Program Item and click on OK, 5. select the Description text box and enter "NUREVIEW", 6. select the Command Line text box and enter "C:\USGS\NUREVIEW.EXE", 7. select the Working Directory text box and enter an appropriate directory (e.g. C:\NUREDATA) and click on OK. If this directory does not already exist, you will need to create it. Following the above steps will create a program group named USGS and will install NUREVIEW as a member of the program group. You can then run NUREVIEW by double clicking on the NUREVIEW icon. For information on using NUREVIEW, you should access the help file provided with the program. If you are using Windows 95, we recommend that you do the following: 1. using Explorer, navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs directory, 2. select the File option of the main menu of Explorer, 3. select the New option from the drop-down menu of the File option, 4. select the Folder option of the drop-down menu of the New option, 5. edit the name of the folder and enter "U.S. Geological Survey" This results in the creation of a new folder named "U.S. Geological Survey". To install the NUREVIEW program in the folder, do the following: 1. using Explorer, navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\U.S. Geological Survey directory, 2. select the File option of the main menu of Explorer, 3. select the New option from the drop-down menu of the File option, 4. select the Shortcut option of the drop-down menu of the New option, 5. select the Command line text box and enter "C:\USGS\NUREVIEW.EXE" This results in the creation of a shortcut to the NUREVIEW program. If you want to be able to access the NUREVIEW help file directly, you can repeat the above steps and enter "C:\USGS\NUREVIEW.HLP" for the command line. After you have completed the above, you can run the NUREVIEW program from the Start menu in the same manner as other programs.
