U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Open-File Report 97-512 README.TXT Navigation and Geophysical Data Collected Onboard the R/V FAY from 1975 & 1976 by Valerie F. Paskevich U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Geology Program 384 Woods Hole Road Woods Hole, MA 02543 Nancy K. Soderberg U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Geology Program 384 Woods Hole Road Woods Hole, MA 02543 This CD-ROM (Compact Disc-Read Only Memory) has been produced in accordance with the ISO 9660 CD-ROM Standard and is therefore capable of being read on any computing platform that has appropriate CD-ROM driver software installed. INTRODUCTION This CD-ROM is a data rescue of the navigation and digital geophysical (gravity, magnetics and bathymetry) data collected aboard the R/V H.J.W. FAY by the United States Geological Survey during the summer field seasons of 1975 and 1976. There are no seismic data available on this disk. The collected geophysical data were subsequently processed using a variety of programs and techniques developed for the gravity, magnetic and bathymetry data sets. The field data and processed data sets were later archived on 9-track tape and stored in the Center's Data Library. The field and processed tapes, nearing 15 years old, were transcribed to disk and have been compiled on this CD-ROM. This CD-ROM was developed using the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) utilized by the World Wide Web (WWW) project. Development of CD-ROM documentation and user interface in HTML allows a user to access the information by using a variety of WWW information browsers (e.g., Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, NCSA Mosaic). The HTML files and WWW client interface provide the user who wishes to access the CD-ROM with a simple graphical user interface (GUI) to facilitate browsing, reviewing information and data, and ease the steps necessary to locate and download selected data files. Some supporting cruise information, such as general ship's track maps, are recorded in multiple formats (i.e., GIF, PostScript and PDF) for user access. In general, most WWW browsers will handle GIF images internally. However, PostScript and PDF have been included for those user's preferring these formats. Please note, these latter formats are generally not handled by WWW browsers and the user must have configured an external viewer to handle these formats. The GNU program ghostview (UNIX operating systems) is needed to handle the PostScript files. Adobe's (http://www.adobe.com) free Acrobat reader (WIN95, MAC/OS and some UNIX operating systems) will handle the PDF formatted files. It is assumed, that users wishing to utilize the CD-ROM will access the data through one of the many available WWW clients. For users who do not have access to a WWW client much of the supporting documentation (e.g., format descriptions and cruise reports) are available in a simple ASCII text version for viewing and printing, and data may be retrieved by accessing the appropriate directory/file (i.e., doc/cruise/fay18.txt) directly. ************************************************************ ************************************* CD CONTENTS AND ORGANIZATION The root directory of the CD-ROM contains the following files: README.1ST - This ASCII text file containing CD-ROM disclaimer and beginning instructions. intro.htm - This is the starting point file that the user should open with their WWW client to access the CD-ROM. ************************************* There are 4 main sub-directories from the root directory of this CD-ROM. They are listed below and contain the following information: Directory data: Contains the navigation and geophysical data processed at the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Woods Hole Field Center (formerly the Branch of Atlantic Marine Geology) in Woods Hole, MA. There are nine additional sub-directories. These sub-directories are named to correspond to the various data formats. The data transcribed from the nine-track tapes are contained in the appropriate directory. Directory htmldocs: This directory contains the HyperText Mark-up Language (HTML) files, and supporting images to properly format the WWW GUI. Directory doc: This directory contains non-HTML formatted information such as ASCII versions of the various cruise reports. This information is included to allow users who do not have access to a WWW browser to view various cruise and data information. Sub-directories include: cruise - This directory contains ASCII versions of the individual cruise reports cruise/figs - This directory contains scanned copies of various figures attached to the submitted cruise reports. There are three sub-directories which represent the format of the individual files. figs/300dpi - scanned cruise report attachments in the Compuserve GIF format figs/ps - scanned cruise report attachments in PostScript format figs/pdf - scanned cruise report attachments in Adobe's PDF format formats - This directory contains ASCII versions of the individual data format descriptions. grnsheet - This directory contains scanned copies of each tape's "green sheet". Three additional sub-directories will be found here. Each sub-directory relates to the format that the "green sheet" has been saved as. grnsheet/gif - Files in this sub-directory have been saved as 300dpi Compuserve GIF format files. grnsheet/ps - Files in this sub-directory have been saved in PostScript format. grnsheet/pdf - Files in this sub-directory have been saved in Adobe's PDF format. Directory plots: Contains various plots illustrating individual cruise tracks and data coverage. Plots were generated utilizing the USGS developed program MAPGEN. ***************************************************************** DISCLAIMER This Compact Disc-Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) publication was prepared by an agency of the United States Government.
