Menlo Park, CA 94025 The remainder of this file contains information under the following headings: SUMMARY SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS INSTALL AND UNINSTALL RESTRICTED FUNCTIONALITY IN ARCVIEW DATA PUBLISHER LAYOUT OF THIS DISC DISCLAIMER SUMMARY In 1983, President Reagan signed the Proclamation declaring the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the United States. The charter of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) places the primary responsibility for mapping territories of the United States within the USGS. Upon declaration of the EEZ, which extends from the coastline to 200 nautical miles offshore, the territory of the United States was enlarged by more than 13 million square kilometers, all of which are under water. The USGS EEZ-SCAN program to map systematically the EEZ began in 1984. This CD-ROM (OF97_540) contains GLORIA sidescan imagery of all the deep-water portion (more than 200 meters) of the EEZ mapped during the 8 years of data collection. The images are accompanied by brief tutorial overviews of plate tectonics, remote sensing with GLORIA and highlights of interesting features from each of the geographic areas: East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, Puerto Rico, West Coast, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Gulf of Alaska, Hawaiian Ridge, Johnston Island, Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll. Interactive links to word definitions, enlarged images, captions, shaded- relief images and geologic maps make this CD-ROM an attractive introductory tool for high school or college classes discussing marine geology or mapping with remote sensing. Images and text are presented through the ArcView Data Publisher (product of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.). The project is set up for ease of use by anyone; no previous GIS software experience is necessary. Those who are proficient with ArcView may choose to run the project or examine the maps using the full ArcView user- interface. Some functionality is restricted; see below for details. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS This CD-ROM was produced in accordance with ISO 9660 standard and is capable of being read on any computing platform that has appropriate CD-ROM drive software installed. The most basic system requirements to use the data with the EEZ-View tutorial and software provided on this disc are as follows: --IBM or compatible personal computer with 80386 or higher processor and a fast hard-drive system --Microsoft Windows 3.XX, Windows NT 3.51 or NT 4.0 --Video color palette must be 256 colors or greater --12-16 MB RAM for Windows 3.XX, 16-32 MB RAM for Windows NT --17 MB virtual memory --CD-ROM drive, 4x or faster --Setup requires approximately 700 KB of disk space for temporary files during installation --True Type fonts must be enabled In order to enhance interactive response, and to provide quality program performance, the following system configuration is strongly recommended: --IBM or compatible personal computer with Pentium processor and a fast hard-drive system --Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 --32-64 MB RAM for Windows NT --17" or larger monitor with 1024x768 resolution and color depth of 256 colors or better --300 MB available space on hard disk to install data files INSTALL AND UNINSTALL: This section contains installation information specific to certain software configurations. Please read the whole section prior to installing EEZ-View. To INSTALL EEZ-View on a PC double-click on setup.exe located in the top-level directory. You will be asked if you want to install the program only, or both the program and the data. For faster image display, install both the program and the data. Be aware that the data require 300 MB of space on one drive. You will have a chance to approve where the program and data are installed. Once EEZ-View is installed, click on the Read Me First icon for information on getting started. When starting EEZ-View, if dialog boxes ask for file locations, uninstall EEZ-View; you did not have enough space on your hard disk to install the EEZ-View data. Reinstall only the program, or clear the required 300 MB of space on your hard disk for the EEZ-View data files and then reinstall both the program and the data. IF a version of PC ArcView older than 2.1 is installed on your machine, you MUST manually remove the file AVHELP.DLL located in both your Windows\system and Windows\system32 directories. Then follow installation instructions above, which will replace those files with one that functions properly with both older ArcViews and EEZ-View. IF you have a dual-boot machine (Windows and Windows NT) we suggest reading file PROGRAM\ETC\README2B.WRI, section 19, which begins "If you want to install ArcView on a dual-boot machine, you should install ArcView under each operating system, although you can install into the same directory." We have not tested EEZ-VIEW in this way. To UNINSTALL EEZ-View delete the eez_view directory from your hard disk, including all sub-directories. In Windows 3.XX and NT 3.51, delete the Read Me First icon, the EEZ-View icon, and the EEZ-View program group from the Program Manager. In Windows NT 4.0, delete any shortcuts to EEZ-View from the Start Menu. If you DO NOT have your own licensed version of ArcView installed, and wish to have a complete uninstall of EEZ-View, then find and remove the AVHELP.DLL file from both your Windows\system and Windows\ system32 directories. RESTRICTED FUNCTIONALITY IN ARCVIEW DATA PUBLISHER: ArcView Data Publisher is a product of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc (ESRI). The ArcView Data Publisher executable (EEZ_VIEW.EXE) is locked to the EEZ_VIEW.APR project. The project and the data are not locked to the executable and can be fully accessed by a licensed version of PC ArcView 2.1. The ArcView Data Publisher functionality restrictions listed below are reprinted on October 21, 1997 from the ESRI website at http://www.esri.com/data/dpublish/avdpfact.htm. The following functionality (normally found in ArcView 2.1) is NOT supported with ArcView Data Publisher: --Saving changes to the project --Opening a new project --Opening another project --Importing documents from another project --Creating new event themes --Address geocoding --Exporting themes --Editing themes --Creating new shapefiles --Creating new tables --Exporting tables --Editing tables --CADViewer technology (i.e., use of DXF and DWG files). If you have data in these formats, convert them to shapefiles for use with ArcView Data Publisher. --ODBC connections to external databases --DLL extensions --Use of AVEXEC() --Use of OIScript custom interfaces --RPC communications LAYOUT OF THIS DISC EEZ-VIEW has a top directory with multiple files required for software installation, plus 2 sub-directories: DATA and PROGRAM. --DATA contains the main project file (EEZ_VIEW.APR) and the four dependent project files (*.ODB), plus three sub-directories: HELP, IMAGES and MAPS --DATA\HELP contains Windows NT and 3.11 versions of the tutorial text file. --DATA\IMAGES contains sub-directories CLIPS and GRAPHICS plus image (*.TIF) and projection (*.TFW) files for each GLORIA mosaic image (*_MOS) and shaded-relief image (*_DEM). Geographic area prefix codes are: AA = Aleutian Arc ALA = Alaska ATL = East Coast of USA BER = Bering Sea COW = West Coast of USA GA = Gulf of Alaska GM = Gulf of Mexico HW1 = Southeastern Hawaiian Ridge HW2 = Central Hawaiian Ridge HW3 = Northwestern Hawaiian Ridge JI = Johnston Island KP = Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll PR = Puerto Rico USA = Continental United States --DATA\IMAGES\CLIPS contains image files (*.TIF) of GLORIA imagery used to illustrate points in the text. These images are not projected. Some file names are related to the topic of the clip. Geographic prefix codes are: ALEU = Aleutian Arc BERING = Bering Sea GOA = Gulf of Alaska JI = Johnston Island KP = Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll --DATA\IMAGES\GRAPHICS contains image (*.TIF) and projection (*.TFW) files of non-GLORIA data and graphics used to illustrate points in the text.
