FILE: README.1ST Digital Geologic Map of the Nevada Test Site Area, Nevada U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-140 ON-LINE USER INSTRUCTIONS Introduction The geologic data associated with this database are distributed in three formats: (1) SDTS vector profile files. (2) ARC/INFO ASCII-generate files, with the text files for INFO using 'TABLES' or MicroSoft Excel or Access, and (3) actual ARC/INFO coverages. Included with this release is a plot file that will produce a stand- alone color plot of the database superposed on the Pahute Mesa, Beatty, Pahranagat Range, and Indian Springs 1:100,000-scale topographic base maps. The map will plot at a scale of 1:120,000 to fit on a 36-inch wide plotter. Also included is extensive map-related information and interpretive text. History of the database The current database was developed in the Geographic Resource Analysis Support System (GRASS), a public-domain geographic information system (GIS). The current release of GRASS and all pertinent documentation are available on Internet from: moon.cecer.army.mil [129.229.20.254] under the directory /grass/grass4.1). The current version of the database was developed in ARC/INFO Rev 7.0.3. All edits and modifications to the database for this revision were done in ARC/INFO. Uncompressing the Tar Files The database was compressed with the GNU utility gzip. If you do not have this utility, it is available from any of the GNU source sites. This software is available for UNIX systems, PCs running DOS, and an executable version for DEC VMS systems. A "tar" utility is also available for all three systems. The command sequences shown below are in UNIX "C" shell (csh). The sequences are the same for other operating systems, but the form of the commands are different. To uncompress the data on a UNIX sytem, enter: UNIX% gunzip ntsrev3.tar To access the data, enter: UNIX% tar xvf ntsrev3.tar The data should now be available under the directories indicated below. Data Location All the data are found in directories under the directory: rev3 A PostScript file, each, of the NTS map and correlation chart along with a copy of the metadata file in HTML format, and this file are in this directory. The STDS files are in the directory: rev3/sdts The ARC/INFO generate files and text files for use in the 'TABLES' subsytem of ARC/INFO are located in the directory: rev3/import The ARC/INFO coverages as built in ARC/INFO 7.0.3 are in the directory: rev3/covers All textsets and fonts used in the plotting of this map are also in the above directory. A PostScript file of the Open-File-Report paper, this file, and the metadata file are found in the directory: rev3/docs An ARC "gra" plot file of the map, and correlation chart are in the directory below. Also plot files for the figures referred to in the open-file report are in the directory: rev3/plots AMLs to plot the data are found in the directory: rev3/aml The shadeset that is used to plot the map and the correlation chart is in the directory: rev3/symbols Points of Contact: Geologic and technical inquires should be directed to Ron Wahl.
