Brief History and Description of Data

[See History of NURE HSSR Program for a summary of the entire program.]

During May and June 1976, totals of 1,725 sediment and 1,684 water samples were collected from 1,781 locations in Lincoln and Flathead Counties of northwest Montana as part of one of the initial Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) NURE Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) studies. This study covered all of the Kalispell quadrangle and parts of the adjacent Sandpoint and Cut Bank quadrangles. Within the Cut Bank quadrangle, 164 sediment samples were collected from 156 wet streams, 1 dry stream, 6 wet natural ponds, and 1 wet artificial pond; and 164 water samples were collected from 158 streams, 6 natural ponds, and 1 artificial pond. The samples were analyzed by LASL for uranium content and the data were released in the GJBX-48(77) report.

The remainder of the Cut Bank quadrangle was sampled during May through November, 1978 as part of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) Cut Bank Quadrangle NURE Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) study. Totals of 1,446 sediment and 1,342 water samples were sent to the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant for uranium and multielement analyses. The analytical data were released in the GJBX-375(81) report. A comparison of the records produced by the two studies indicates that 17 stream sediment and 14 stream water samples from the original study were included in the quadrangle study samples sent to Oak Ridge. Additionally, 129 sediment and 118 water locations from the original study were apparently resampled for the quadrangle study. The latitude and longitude coordinates for these reanalyzed samples and resampled locations do not always correspond exactly between data files but are usually very close.

The following is a list of all sample types collected in the Cut Bank quadrangle and included in the NEW-FORMAT NURE data files.

Summary of Cut Bank quadrangle sample types.
Sediment Sample Type Number of Samples Water Sample Type Number of Samples
Wet Streams 1,142 Streams 1,133
Dry Streams 311 Wells 249
Wet Springs 94 Springs 98
Dry Springs 33 Natural Ponds 12
Wet Natural Ponds 12 Artificial Ponds 1
Wet Artificial Ponds 1
Total Sediments 1,593 Total Waters 1,493

These Cut Bank quadrangle samples were analyzed by one or more of the following methods:

Composition of the NEW-FORMAT NURE Data Files

The data in the NEW-FORMAT NURE data files consist of records from both the GJBX-48(77) report and the GJBX-375(81) report. Records for the reanalyzed samples have been combined into a single record that contains all of the information from both studies. Differences in coordinates for corresponding records are fully documented in the REFORMAT field. Records for locations that were apparently resampled are also documented in the REFORMAT field.

Download The Data

The NURE HSSR data are now available online in two databases: The sediment database (also includes data for soils and some rocks) at http://tin.er.usgs.gov/nure/sediment/ and the water database at http://tin.er.usgs.gov/nure/water/. From these two websites, NURE HSSR data can be selected, examined, summarized, and downloaded by political boundaries (State and County), by quadrangle (1:250,000-scale, 1:100,000-scale, and 1:63,360-scale for Alaska or 1:24,000-scale for the Lower 48 States), and by hydrologic unit (drainage region, subregion, river basin, or sub-basin). Selected data can be downloaded as a dBase file, a shapefile, an HTML table, or ASCII text (tab- or comma-delimited).

Notes for Data Users

The data in the water database includes samples collected by 3 different methods with respect to filtering and acidification (See the SAMPTYP coding explanation in the On-Line Manual for New-Format NURE HSSR Data Files for descriptions of different Sample Types. Analytical data may not be directly comparable for water samples collected by different methods.

According to notes found with the original field maps, no samples were collected in the Blackleaf and Dupuyer West 7.5 minute quadrangles because of access problems.
