Brief History and Description of Data

[See History of NURE HSSR Program for a summary of the entire program.]

Totals of 1,649 sediment and 905 water samples were collected from the Montana portion of the Wallace quadrangle between October and November, 1976 and March and May, 1977 as part of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) Montana-Wallace Quadrangle NURE Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) study.

Because of the NURE programmatic change in 1977 from states and study areas to quadrangle studies, LASL was given responsibility for the remainder of the Wallace quadrangle. In July of 1978, an additional 330 sediment and 319 water samples were collected from the Idaho portion of the Wallace quadrangle to complete the LASL Wallace Quadrangle NURE Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) study. The water samples were analyzed by LASL for uranium and then 1,005 of the samples were sent to the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant for additional uranium and multielement analyses. The water analytical data were released by Oak Ridge in the GJBX-373(81) report. The sediment samples were analyzed by LASL for uranium and up to 43 additional elements. This sediment analytical data and the LASL uranium analyses for all water samples were released by Bendix Field Engineering Corp. in the GJBX-15(82) report (microfiche only). Note: One sediment sample collected in the Wallace quadrangle was first reported with samples from the adjacent Hamilton quadrangle. This sample was later included in the GJBX-15(82) Wallace Quadrangle HSSR Study report.

The following is a list of all sample types collected and reported for NURE studies in the Wallace quadrangle.

Summary of Wallace quadrangle sample types.

Wet Artificial Ponds 5 Artificial Ponds 5
Total Sediments 1,979 Total Waters 1,224

These Wallace quadrangle samples were analyzed by one or more of the following methods:

Composition of the NEW-FORMAT NURE Data Files

The data in the NEW-FORMAT NURE data files consist of sediment records from the Bendix GJBX-15(82) report and combined water records from both the Bendix and Oak Ridge GJBX-373(81) reports.

Download The Data

The NURE HSSR data are now available online in two databases: The sediment database (also includes data for soils and some rocks) at http://tin.er.usgs.gov/nure/sediment/ and the water database at http://tin.er.usgs.gov/nure/water/. From these two websites, NURE HSSR data can be selected, examined, summarized, and downloaded by political boundaries (State and County), by quadrangle (1:250,000-scale, 1:100,000-scale, and 1:63,360-scale for Alaska or 1:24,000-scale for the Lower 48 States), and by hydrologic unit (drainage region, subregion, river basin, or sub-basin). Selected data can be downloaded as a dBase file, a shapefile, an HTML table, or ASCII text (tab- or comma-delimited).

Wallace Quadrangle Sediment Data - 1,979 records
Wallace Quadrangle Water Data - 1,224 records

Notes for Data Users

Previous users of the Wallace quadrangle water database have noted that the pH values are distinctly different between the samples collected in 1976-77 from Montana and those collected in 1978 from Idaho.
