There were 26 earthquakes that caused that level of damage. The most reknown are the four earthquakes in the 1811- 1812 sequence; two on Dec 16, 1811, and one each on Jan 23, 1812, and Feb 7, 1812. Their calculated Moment Magnitudes were 8.1, 7.2, 7.8, and 8.0, respectively. The most recent damaging earthquake was on June 10, 1987 near Olney, Illinois. It had a Moment Magnitude of 5.2. Purpose: The data was generated to help in understanding the seismotectonic hazards in the vicinity of the lower Wabash Valley. This data complements similar data collected in the vicinity of New Madrid, MO (US Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-0574, available via ftp on greenwood.cr.usgs.gov) Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Range_of_Dates/Times: Beginning_Date: 1812 Ending_Date: 1995 Currentness_Reference: All earthquakes known to have caused damage in the map area are included in this dataset.
