    Description:
      Abstract:
This data is from the fault printing separate used in publishing the
1988 Geologic Map of Kentucky. Separates for geology, surface faults, and
cultural features were scanned and sent via email from U. S.
Geological Survey, Reston, VA. The scanned data was converted to a
        ARC/INFO georeferenced cover.

Our intent is to show the overall fault pattern, and to show the
locations of the main exposed and near-surface faults for
comparison to deep subsurface structures. We made little attempt to
edit details of the digitized faults, beyond adding tic marks to
indicate dip directions of a few normal faults. For details such
as exact locations, fault dips, separations, and cross-cutting
relations, users should consult the original geologic map
and the more detailed maps from which it was compiled.
      Purpose:
The data was generated to help in understanding the seismotectonic
hazards in the vicinity of the lower Wabash Valley. This data
complements similar data collected in the vicinity of New Madrid, MO
(US Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-0574, available via ftp at
        <ftp://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/pub/open-file-reports/ofr-95-0574>)

No tests performed. Accuracy of locations on the Geologic Map of

the same as on that source map. Absolute locations are within several

1:250,000 scale Paducah Quadrangle Geologic Map and were
adjusted to connect where it appeared they should.

(capitalized parts of words are arcinfo commands)

Scanned data in dxf format emailed to SRhea. The covers were not
georeferenced and had to be 'rubber-sheeted'. This involved
TRANSFORMing the cover from page units (inches) to map units
(meters) in an Albers Equal Area projection. Cultural features and
latitude/longitude intersections were identified on the cultural
features cover and on previously georeferenced base covers. Links
between the two covers were created and the cultural features cover
was ADJUSTed and compared to the base cover. Several iterations of
creating links and ADJUSTing were required to get a good match.
The links were then copied from the cultural features cover into
the fault cover and used to ADJUST the faults. The adjusted cover
was clipped to the map area.

The resulting fault cover overlapped some of the more accurate data
in the Paducah cover (padflt) and the less accurate data in the Illinois
Basin Consortium cover (ibcflt). This cover's boundary was used to erase
overlapping faults in the IBC cover. This cover was erased by the
          Paducah cover's boundary.

At the boundary between the Paducah cover and Kentucky cover,
          misalignments between faults were visible.
These errors were assumed to be in the Kentucky cover and it was
          adjusted again to eliminate misalignments.

Revisions: Data not explicitly changed, although location
inaccuracies introduced or corrected by transform and adjust
          procedures is unknown.
