Publication_Date: 2000 Title: COVERAGE EAST -- Geology of the Island of Puerto Rico, East of 67 7'30" West Longitude at a Scale of 1:100,000 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Map Series_Information: Series_Name: U.S Geological Survey Open-File Report Issue_Identification: USGS OFR 98-38 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Reston, Virginia Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: () Description: Abstract: The geologic map of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico for this study consists of a main island and the three largest surrounding islands of Isla de Vieques, Isla de Culebra, and Isla de Mona. The geologic map of the main island of Puerto Rico has been partitioned into three sections(west; central; east ) and is based upon a 1:100,000 scale compilation by R.D. Krushensky of sixty-seven geologic quadrangles, sixty-two of which were mapped at a scale of 1:20,000. Compilation of the geologic map for the main island of Puerto Rico was initiated in order to produce a more recent and useful geologic map to be used by both government and industry. Because of the length of time over which these geologic quadrangles were mapped and the large number of individuals involved in the mapping, reinterpretation of the original data for some quadrangles was necessary. The geologic maps for the above-mentioned three surrounding islands (Isla de Vieques, Isla de Culebra, and Isla de Mona) are not included in the 1:100,000 scale compilation, but reflect the general geologic features at a scale of 1:240,000 as presented in Cox and Briggs, 1973, Metallogenic Map of Puerto Rico, USGS Map I-721. The geologic map used in this study of the geology of Puerto Rico is presented at a scale of 1:100,000 and consists of 151 map units for the main island. Purpose: The purpose in creating this digital map was to enable the combination, analysis and manipulation of geology and other digital thematic data (geochemistry, geophysics, mineral occurrences) relevant to the mineral resource assessment, and to provide a useful product to an ever-growing Geographic Information System (GIS) community. The digital geologic map of Puerto Rico allows for the analysis and manipulation of information which is impossible with hard copy (paper). Maps can be reproduced at varying scales and at different projections without a great deal of difficulty. Derivative maps can also be produced by combining map units (i.e. all intrusive map units), or selecting only combinations of map units for which there is an interest. The digital geologic map of Puerto Rico allows for the analysis and manipulation of information which is impossible with hard copy (paper). Maps can be reproduced at varying scales and at different projections without a great deal of difficulty. Derivative maps can also be produced by combining map units (i.e., all intrusive map units), or selecting only combinations of map units for which there is an interest. Supplemental_Information: The geologic maps, as shown, consist of several overlying coverages. Besides the geologic coverage (West, Central, East), each map also has a normal fault coverage (faultw200n, faultc200n, faulte200n) and a thrust fault coverage (faultw200, faultc200, faulte200), respectively. The colors and patterns used on the geologic maps are keyed to the geologic map unit (FMATN) attribute in the Polygon Attribute Table (PAT) for each coverage. The item FMATN in each coverage is linked to an item FMATN in lookup tables for color (prcolor.lut), patterns (prshade.lut) and terranes (prprov.lut). The user should examine AML files (WEST.AML, CENTRAL.AML, EAST.AML) in the AML Folder contained on the cd-rom (USGS Open-File Report 98-38) to see how the maps were constructed. Krushensky compiled the 1:100,000 scale geologic map from individual 1:20,000 scale quadrangle maps. Walter J. Bawiec scanned, vectorized, registered, projected, tagged, edited, and created the Arc/Info coverages. Native_Data_Set_Environment: Windows_NT, 4.0, Intel ARC/INFO version 7.1.1 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: The polygons shown on the coverages have been tagged with map unit mnemonics within the attribute 'FMATN'. The attribute 'fmatn' is used as a link to lookup tables to color the polygons (prcolor.lut) and to add patterns (prshade.lut). They are also used to create the terrane map (prprov.lut). Therefore, the 'FMATN' attribute is very important and has been reviewed several times in creating and editing these coverages. However, it is possible that some polygons have been mislabeled with the wrong map unit mnemonic. It is not believed, however, that any large units are mislabeled because of the extensive reviews the maps have under gone. Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon and chain-node topology present. All polygons have a label. The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is displayed as five separate coverages. One coverage Mona, is at a scale of 1:240,000 and shows Isla de Mona. One coverage Vieques, is at the scale of 1:240,000 and shows the islands of Isla de Vieques and Isla de Culebra. Three coverages (West, Central, East) show the main island of Puerto Rico at a scale of 1:100,000. The main island is split into three pieces for ease in editing and displaying such detailed coverages. Some structural attributes, such as anticlines and synclines, are displayed on the maps. They were on the original geenline that was scanned and are left on the maps because of the added structural information they convey. Completeness_Report: Digital maps shown in this study include the main island of Puerto Rico, Isla de Mona, and Isla de Vieques. Smaller islands located offshore, including Isla Desecheo, are not part of this study. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The East coverage has a Root Mean Square (RMS) error of 28.566 meters, which means locations shown on the digital coverages are within 28.566 meters of their location on the ground. This error was computed during the transformation of coordinates from scanning units (inches) to polyconic meters. Process_Step: Process_Description: Geology from 1:20,000 scale quadrangle maps was interpreted, contacts resolved with adjoining quadrangles, and transposed in ink onto a 1:100,000 greenline base map. This was also done with major faults and fault systems. The inked geologic contacts and thicker-drawn faults were scanned on an optical drum scanner and vectorized. Arc/Info was used to build polygon topology, edit linework, put labels into polygons, and to add attributes to labels. The last four items (COLR, COLR2, SHADE, PROV) were created using the ARC ADDITEM command and used in attributing and editing the polygons. These ITEMS are to be ignored by the user. Their values are no longer current and/or relevent. The item FMATN is the only attribute to be considered by the user when using EAST.PAT. This attribute contains the mnemonic for the geologic map units used in the geologic map. FMATN is used as the link to the lookup tables for color of polygons (prcolor.lut), patterns of polygons (prshade.lut) and geologic terranes (prov.lut). The values that can be found in the FMATN item are listed under the ENTITY_TYPE_DEFINITION of the ENTITY_TYPE of the DETAILED_DESCRIPTION of the ENTITY_AND_ATTRIBUTE_INFORMATION section of the metadata. The first seven items of the EAST.AAT (FNODE#, TNODE#, LPOLY#, RPOLY#, LENGTH, EAST#, EAST-ID) are Arc/Info generated and should not be altered. The last item, NOPLOT, has a value of either '0' or '1'. Arcs with a value of NOPLOT = '1' are located on the east and/or west sides of coverages that abut another coverage.
