5. Liquefaction is a shallow process and typically occurs at a depth of less than 10 to 15 m except where shaking is very severe, in which case the liquefaction may be deeper yet. At depths exceeding 5 to 10 m, the shear resistance of granular sediments generally exceeds the strength of seismic shaking except where it is very strong.
