Abstract:

This CD-ROM contains copies of the navigation and field sidescan sonar  data collected within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surrounding Puerto Rico and off the eastern United States during cruises aboard the R/V FARNELLA.  The survey of the Puerto Rico EEZ was completed during  one cruise between 4 November and 3 December, 1985.  The survey of  the EEZ off the eastern United States was completed during five cruises between 2 February and 30 May, 1987.  The data were collected as part of the USGS EEZ-SCAN program which was a cooperative mapping program between the US Geological Survey and the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences of the UK.  The survey areas included the entire US EEZ of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as well as of the eastern United States from the Canadian international boundary at Georges Bank to the Bahamian international boundary east of Florida.  GLORIA imagery was collected seaward of approximately 400 m water depth.

Purpose:

These data sets were processed and combined to produce images of the seafloor  from the deepwater regions of the U.S. coasts.  The digital mosaics provide broad-scale views of the seafloor which have been used to support further scientific studies.

The data were acquired with the GLORIA sidescan sonar system which was operated by the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences of the United Kingdom. Documentation of this system is summarized in a report by Sommers (1996). Briefly, the system operated at 6.5 kHz, transmitted a sound pulse every 40 seconds during the Puerto Rico survey and every 30 seconds during the work off the east coast. The data was logged digitally on 9-track magnetic tapes using 992 pixels per ping. Pixel resolution is approximately 50 m in the across track direction and 100 m in the along track direction. The data on this CD was taken from the 9-track tapes and formatted in two ways on this CD. First, the image data (8-bit binary) and header information (ascii file containing time and navigation information) are kept separately in the "unmerged" directory. Second, the image data and header information have been combined and are presented using the netCDF file form in the "netcdf" directory. These file structures are summarized on this CD, and also can be found in Paskevich (1992).
