INTRODUCTION This CD-ROM contains copies of the navigation and field sidescan sonar data collected within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surrounding Puerto Rico and off the eastern United States during cruises aboard the R/V FARNELLA. The survey of the Puerto Rico EEZ was completed during one cruise between 4 November and 3 December, 1985. The survey of the EEZ off the eastern United States was completed during five cruises between 2 February and 30 May, 1987. The data were collected as part of the USGS EEZ-SCAN program which was a cooperative mapping program between the US Geological Survey and the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences of the UK. The survey areas included the entire US EEZ of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as well as of the eastern United States from the Canadian international boundary at Georges Bank to the Bahamian international boundary east of Florida. GLORIA imagery was collected seaward of approximately 400 m water depth. There are four directories on this CD-ROM. These directories include: 1. Directory DOC Documentation of the sidescan sonar data format is summarized here. The sidescan data is presented in two different ways to make it available to a broader community of users. It is presented in an "unmerged" form and as netCDF files. The "document.txt" file summarizes the unmerged form and the "netcdf.txt" file summarizes the netCDF form. 2. Directory HTMLDOCS This directory contains the HTML files and supporting graphics to allow user access to the CD-ROM via any World Wide Web browser. 3. Directory ECGLORIA This directory contains the GLORIA imagery, navigation, and cruise reports for the work done off the east coast of the United States. There are 4 directories under ECGLORIA: A. Directory REPORTS This directory which contains copies of the cruise reports from the five different cruises. In these cruise reports are lists of the participants and a brief narrative summarizing the cruise itself. These are ASCII files. B. Directory NAV This directory which contains the navigation and bathymetry collected during the five cruises. The five files containing the navigation are: 1. farn1.nav 3 Feb. - 26 Feb., 1987 2. farn2.nav 1 Mar. - 26 Mar., 1987 3. farn3.nav 28 Mar. - 24 Apr., 1987 4. farn4.nav 28 Apr. - 7 May, 1987 5. farn5.nav 10 May - 27 May, 1987 The navigation is in ASCII files, each file containing nine fields separated by spaces. Field 1: Latitude in decimal degrees. Field 2: Longitude in decimal degrees. Field 3: Year Field 4: Month Field 5: Day Field 6: Hour Field 7: Minute Field 8: Second Field 9: Depth in corrected meters - assuming a speed of sound of 1500 m/sec. Carter's tables corrections applied. C. Directory NETCDF This directory contains the GLORIA imagery in the "netcdf" file format. A description of this form is summarized in the DOCUMENTATION directory. Within this directory are 5 directories for each of the five legs of the field program. In addition to the imagery, each of these directories contains an ASCII file (files.txt) stating the file name, start and end time, and the number of lines and samples in each image file. D. Directory UNMERGED This directory contains the GLORIA imagery and header information for each strip of imagery in two separate files. Within this directory are 5 directories for each of the five legs of the field program. The 8-bit binary imagery is held in files ending with the suffix ".exp", and the companion header information is stored in a file with the same prefix, but a suffix ending with ".hdr." The header information is an ASCII format. Details of this file format is summarized in the DOCUMENTATION directory. 4. Directory PRGLORIA This directory contains the GLORIA imagery, navigation, and cruise reports for the work done off the east coast of the United States. There are 4 directories under ECGLORIA: A. Directory REPORTS This directory which contains the cruise report. In the cruise report are lists of the participants and a brief narrative summarizing the cruise itself. This is an ASCII file. B. Directory NAV This directory which contains the navigation and bathymetry collected during the cruise. The file containing the navigation is: 1. farn85-4.nav 5 Nov. - 2 Dec., 1985 The navigation is an ASCII file containing nine fields separated by spaces.
