GEOLOGIC HAZARDS

Figure 2.--Graph showing the association of the May 18, 1997 and April 29, 1998 Wolf Mountain landslide events with intervals of rising temperatures that include the first yearly occurrence of the 58°F threshold. As shown, the April 29, 1998 and May 18, 1997 events occurred 5 and 10 days, respectively, after the arrival of the threshold. Note that prior to the landslide events the 6-day moving average temperatures rose rapidly from the 40's to the 60's, suggesting a high rate of snowmelt.
DISCLAIMER

Data used to estimate daily maximum air temperatures at the landslide source areas:
Lapse rate: -4.5°F/1000ft

1997
Landslide source area elevation = 7150 ft
Jackson, Wyoming weather station elevation = 6244 ft
Temperature correction for elevation difference = -4.1°F

1998
Debris-flow source area elevation = 6600 ft
Jackson, Wyoming weather station elevation = 6244 ft
Temperature correction for elevation difference = -1.6°F
