The map was compiled from previously published data, with field examination by L.Cox in the eastern part of the area. The map database represents the general distribution of surficial deposits in the Verde Valley, Arizona. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology. The scale of the source maps limits the spatial resolution (scale) the database to 1:24,000 or smaller. Purpose: The purpose of this evaluation of the Verde Valley and adjacent areas of the Prescott National Forest is to provide geologic information that may be of use to land managers in making decisions regarding present and future sand and gravel resource development. Supplemental_Information: This GIS consists of two Arc/Info datasets: one line and polygon file (vv_geo) containing geologic contacts (lines) and geologic map rock units (polygons), and a point file (sgpits) containing locations of sand and gravel pits. A textual report: of99-127.ps is a Postscript report containing a discussion of the potential for aggregate resources in the Verde Valley. Pearthree and P.K. House of the Arizona Geological Survey were indispensable to this study. This study also benefited significantly from discussions with them concerning the Quaternary geology of the area. Native_Data_Set_Environment: SunOS, 5.5.1, sun4u UNIX ARC/INFO version 7.2.1 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Attribute accuracy was verified by manual comparison of the source with hard copy printouts and plots. Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon and chain-node topology present. Polygons intersecting the neatline are closed along the border. Segments making up the outer and inner boundaries of a poygon tie end-to-end to completely enclose the area. Line segments are a set of sequentially numbered coordinate pairs. No duplicate features exist nor duplicate points in a data string. Intersecting lines are separated into individual line segments at the point of intersection. Point data are represented by two sets of coordinate pairs, each with the same coordinate values. All nodes are represented by a single coordinate pair which indicates the beginning or end of a line segment. The neatline was generated by mathematically generating the four sides of the quadrangle and densifying the lines of latitude and longitude. Completeness_Report: This dataset was produced from previously published reports Pearthree, (1993); House and Pearthree, (1993); House, (1994); and Cox (1995). These sources show the distribution of surficial alluvial deposits of the Verde River are considered to be the best geologic maps available for an evaluation of sand and gravel resources. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The horizontal positional accuracy for the digital data is probably no better than +/- 25 meters. It was tested by visual comparison of the source with hard copy plots. Lineage: Source_Information: Source_Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: House, P.K. Originator: Pearthree,P.A. Source_Contribution: These digital files were used in the digital map compilation. Process_Step: Process_Description: Selected units from the geologic maps of House, 1994 and House and Pearthree, 1993, were digitized using GSMAP software from the 1:24,000 paper source maps. The digital files were then converted to Arc/Info coverages for attributing, edgematching and proofing. These coverages were then assembled into a single coverage which represents areas of resource potential for sand and gravel. Process_Date: 1995-1997 Process_Step: Process_Description: The base map layer was prepared from paper prints of the U.S. Geological Survey Williams, Flagstaff, Sedona, and Prescott 1:100,000 topographic maps. These were scanned and then the images were transformed from scanner coordinates to projection coordinates. The images were then trimmed and mosaiced digitally and cropped to the study area. The basemap is are provided for general reference only.
