000read.me file that describes USGS OF99-438, 10/7/1999, pd Lewis, R.S. and Derkey, P. D., 1999, Digital geologic map of part of the Thompson Falls 1:100,000 quadrangle, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-438, 32 p. This report describes the contents of a digital data set (approximately 3 MB) which consists of Arc/Info Export format files and associated macro programs. A page-sized, color version of the digital geologic map is included in the report. The data set also includes macro programs and complete plot files for creating a paper copy of the map at a scale of 1:100,000. The data set is available on the World Wide Web at http://wrgis.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of99-438/of99-438.html. It is also available via anonymous FTP from: wrgis.wr.usgs.gov, in the directory: pub/open-file/of99-438. Requirements: A networked computer system is required to copy the data set from the host computer across the Internet. A geographic information system (GIS) capable of importing Arc/Info Export format files is required for access to the digital files. All plot files are stored in HPGL2 format. The digital data set files are in UNIX ASCII format. *************************************************** Explanation of digital data files for the 'Digital geologic map of part of the Thompson Falls 1:100,000 quadrangle, Idaho,' U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-438: The Thompson Falls GIS is available as four UNIX compressed TAR files: covers.tar.Z, maps.tar.Z, more.tar.Z, and amls.tar.Z, along with the report text (of99-438.pdf) in an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File (PDF) format. To download the GIS data files, create a new workspace in a UNIX working environment and copy the covers.tar.Z, maps.tar.Z, more.tar.Z, and amls.tar.Z files to your new workspace, and also download the of99-438.pdf file. To uncompress the filename.tar.Z files, use the command 'uncompress -v filename.tar.Z' and then to extract the files from the resulting filename.tar files, use the command 'tar -xvf filename.tar.' To import the Arc/Info interchange-format files into your workspace, open Arc/Info on your workstation and enter '&run 00import' at the Arc: prompt. Your working directory should contain the following files: 00import.aml - Arc/Info program to import Arc/Info interchange-format files into the user's workspace. of99-438.pdf - Open-File Report text in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File (PDF) format. Primary Arc/Info EXPORT-format files (*.e00) and metadata (*.met) for the digital geology of the Thompson Falls quadrangle: tf100k.e00 - principal Thompson Falls line and polygon geologic map coverage tfpnt.e00 - point coverage of structural map symbols tf100k.met - metadata file Additional Arc/Info EXPORT-format files (*.e00) necessary to re-create the geologic map plates: calcomp1.shd.e00 - calcomp1.shd shadeset fnt037.e00 - font 37 fnt038.e00 - font 38 fnt040.e00 - font 40 geoscamp2.mrk.e00 - markerset for structural symbols tfallsu11.e00 - exterior boundary of the Thompson Falls quadrangle, mathematically generated. Arc/Info AML, graphics, key, lineset, and text files necessary to re-create the geologic map quadrangle plates: tf100k.aml - program that creates a graphics file (*.GRA) of the geologic map plate. scale2a.aml - program that generates the customary and metric bar scales and representative fraction for the scales. index_tf.gra - index map showing location of the Thompson Falls quadrangle (the mapped area) with respect to the Pacific Northwest. tf_line.key - keyfile that generates the contact, structure and other lines in the explanation. tf_pol.key - keyfile that generates the geologic map unit explanation. tf_sym.key - keyfile that generates the point symbol explanation. geology.lin - lineset file geo.prj - a textfile used to identify real-world (geographic) coordinates - for use in adding latitude and longitude notation around the margins of the quadrangle. u11.prj - a textfile used to identify UTM, zone 11 (with a yshift = -5,000,000) map projection - for use in adding latitude and longitude notation around the margins of the quadrangle. tfcrd.txt - a textfile listing map credits. tfdisc.txt - a textfile with a digital data disclaimer statement. tfref.txt - a textfile listing map references. Plotter calibration file: cal.dat - the color calibration file used in the Arc/Info 'HPGL2' command to create plot files of the plates for plotting on the USGS HP650C in the Spokane Field Office. This file is a custom file for this particular plotter. Other plotters will require their own custom color calibration file. Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps), Arc/Info graphics (*.gra) and HPGL2 (*.hp) files for the digital geologic map quadrangle plate (scale 1:100,000): tf100k.gra tf100k.hp
