Description:
Abstract:
A sidescan sonar, bathymetric and high-resolution seismic-reflection survey was conducted off Sarasota, Florida to describe the relationship between the inner shelf and adjacent shore face. The survey area covers 15 km of the coast along Longboat Key and Lido Key and is centered around New Pass. It extends offshore from the 3.5-m contour to approximately the 12-m contour, a distance of 11 km. Data collected along tracklines, spaced approximately 150 m apart were used to construct a digital sidescan sonar mosaic, bathymetric map, and preliminary subsurface maps of the study area. This CD-ROM contains copies of the completed sidescan sonar mosaic, bathymetric image, collected samples and interpretive geologic overlays.
Purpose:
Beach erosion is a major concern on the highly developed west-central Florida coast. In 1992, Congress directed the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to initiate a 5-year study of this region in order to better understand the recent geologic history of the barrier island system and the processes that control the distribution and transport of sediment on the inner shelf. The West-Central Florida Coastal Studies Project is a cooperative effort between the USGS, the University of South Florida, and Eckerd College.
