Description:
Abstract:
This DVD-ROM contains digital high resolution seismic reflection data collected during the USGS SEAX 96004 cruise. The coverage is the nearshore of the New York and New Jersey Apex. The seismic-reflection data are stored as SEG-Y standard format that can be read and manipulated by most seismic-processing software. Much of the information specific to the data are contained in the headers of the SEG-Y format files. The file system format is ISO 9660 which can be read with DOS, Unix, and MAC operating systems with the appropriate DVD-ROM driver software installed.
Purpose:
Beginning in 1995, the USGS, in cooperation with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE), New York District, began a program to generate reconnaissance maps of the sea floor offshore of the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area, one of the most populated coastal regions of the United States. The goal of this mapping program is to provide a regional synthesis of the sea-floor environment, including a description of sedimentary environments, sediment texture, sea-floor morphology, and geologic history to aid in understanding the impacts of anthropogenic activities, such as ocean dumping. This mapping effort differs from previous studies of this area by obtaining digital, sidescan sonar images that cover 100 percent of the sea floor. This investigation was motivated by the need to develop an environmentally acceptable solution for the disposal of dredged material from the New York - New Jersey Port, by the need to identify potential sources of sand for renourishment of the southern shore of Long island, and by the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the transport and long-term fate of contaminants by investigations of the present distribution of materials discharged into the New York Bight over the last 100+ years (Schwab and others, 1997). Data collected in 1996, USGS cruise SEAX96004, augments data collected in 1995 with sidescan sonar and seismic reflection data collected within the New York Bight Apex region. This report is an archive of the boomer seismic reflection data collected in 1996.

Process_Description:
The subbottom data were recorded on the Mudseis data acquisition system in SEG-Y format. The conversion program processSegy was used to renumber the traces as trace 1 or traces 1 and 2 for 2-channel data and fill out the SEG-Y EBCDIC reel header. Traces were renumbered because the Mudseis system begins with trace 0 instead of 1. The data were filtered with a low pass of 300 Hz and a high pass of 3000 Hz at the acquistion step along with a 48 db gain.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The data were acquired using an ORE/ Huntec boomer seismic profiling system. A Geopulse or Huntec electro-mechanical source was used. ITI and Benthos streamers were the receivers. Seismic data were logged digitally with the Mudseis acquisition system. The SEG-Y data were checked for quality with SIOSEIS seismic processing software and are archived on this DVD-ROM. The SEG-Y format is described in detail by Barry and others (1975). The files are in standard 16-bit integer SEG-Y format. The SEG-Y files consist of shot files with one or two traces per shot depending if one or two channels were recorded. Channel one was an ITI streamer and channel 2 when recorded was a Benthos streamer. There are 1600 samples per trace. The sample rate was 0.125 ms which resulted in a trace length of 200 ms. The boomer was fired at a rate of 0.5 seconds.
