13. Detailed view of a sand-dollar field. The sidescan-sonar imagery shows the sand
dollars as a high-backscatter band which usually has an abrupt seaward edge and a more
gradational shoreward edge. Bottom photographs show that the inner shelf is rippled and
that in the sand-dollar field the sand dollars stand on edge. Surface sediment samples
show virtually no difference in sediment texture within and outside the sand-dollar field.
