Description:
Abstract:
This image is a 250m version of the composite Gulf of Mexico GLORIA sidescan
sonar mosaic.
Purpose:
This GIS overlay is a component of the U. S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole
Field Center's, Gulf of Mexico ArcView GIS database. The Gulf of Mexico
GIS database is intended to organize and display USGS held data and provide
on-line (WWW) access to the data and/or metadata.
Supplemental_Information:
The images, compos.jpg and compos.tif, have a black background surrounding
the sidescan sonar mosaic.
The images, composw.jpg and composw.tif, have a white background surrounding
the sidescan sonar mosaic. For some display purposes, these images
may be more suitable than images with a black background described above.
The Gulf of Mexico GLORIA sidescan sonar data were collected during 3 separate
field cruise

Raw imagery of GLORIA data may be retrieved from this CD-ROM. The user
must note the number of pixels (samples) and lines contained in the data
set to convert the raw imagery to a useable image format. The information
can be found in the 'lbl' file associated with the image file.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The 16 individual 50m GLORIA GEOTIFF images for the Gulf of Mexico were
re-sampled to 250m and combined to create an overview digital mosaic of
the Gulf of Mexico. Utilizing the PCI Remote Sensing software, an empty
'pix' file was defined. This file included the maximum extents of the GLORIA
Gulf of Mexico survey area at a 250 m resolution. The images original projection
(Albers Equal Area) and datum (Clarke 1866) was used to define the new
image file. Utilizing the georeferencing information contained in the GEOTIFF
images, the individual 50 m mosaic were placed in their proper geographic
location in the new image via GCPworks. A bilinear resampling was applied
to the image pixels to create the sub-sampled GLORIA mosaic.
The compos.tif image with a black area surrounding the mosaic was processed
with Corel PhotoPaint to convert the black area to white. The black was
replaced with white using a flood fill operation. For some display purposes,
this image may be more useful than the one with a black background.
The compos.tif image with a black area surrounding the mosaic was processed
with Corel PhotoPaint to convert the black are to white. The black was
replaced with white using a flood fill operation and then converted and
saved in a JPG format. For some display purposes, this image may be more
useful than the one with a black background.

Technical_Prerequisites:
An image viewer, image processing or GIS software package capable of importing
a GEOTIFF or JPEG format file. If the georeferencing information cannot
be automatically imported from the image file, the user may wish to obtain
the georeferencing information contained in a separate file, compos.txt,
in the data/gloria directory.
