Description:
Abstract:
This image is an enlarged, detailed area from the Gulf of Mexico GLORIA
sidescan sonar mosaic. The image was co-registered with SeaMARC 1A sidescan
sonar data collected during R/V FARNELLA 90-3 cruise.
Purpose:
This GIS overlay is a component of the U. S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole
Field Center's, Gulf of Mexico ArcView GIS database. The Gulf of Mexico
GIS database is intended to organize and display USGS held data and provide
on-line (WWW) access to the data and/or metadata.
Supplemental_Information:
Two images of the 25 m GLORIA sidescan sonar data are available for the
study area. They are identical with the exception that one image has been
radiometrically enhanced for better viewing.

Raw imagery of GLORIA data may be retrieved from this CD-ROM. The user
must note the number of pixels (samples) and lines contained in the data
set to convert the raw imagery to a useable image format. The information
can be found in the 'lbl' file associated with the image file.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
A new, blank georeferenced database was created utilizing the PCI Remote
Sensing software. This 'pix' file was defined using the maximum extents
of the two required, adjacent 50m GLORIA mosaics. The GLORIA images original
projection (Albers Equal Area), resolution, and datum (Clarke 1866) were
used to define the new 'pix' file.
The two raw (BIL) images, mos13.raw & mos14.raw, were imported and
placed in the PCI 'pix' database by specifying their starting line and
pixel coordinates in the new database.
Utilizing the PCI Remote Sensing software, a corresponding subarea of the
GLORIA data was extracted and added to the existing utme00.pix file. This
process extracted a selected area of the GLORIA data that fell within the
defined SeaMARC1A Mississippi Fan study area. Coincident to the sub-area
being extracted, the image was re-projected to UTM. The final, geo-referenced
image was added to the utme00.pix database where the completed SeaMARC1A
mosaic had been placed.
The completed 25 m Gulf of Mexico GLORIA sidescan sonar data detail area
was exported from the PCI 'pix' database as a GEOTIFF image with an associated
ARC "world" file.
The completed and radiometrically enhanced 25 m Gulf of Mexico GLORIA sidescan
sonar data detail area was exported from the PCI 'pix' database as a GEOTIFF
image with an associated ARC "world" file.
The completed 25 m Gulf of Mexico GLORIA sidescan sonar data detail area
was exported from the PCI 'pix' database as a JPG image with an associated
ARC "world" file.

Technical_Prerequisites:
An image viewer, image processing or GIS software package capable of importing
a GEOTIFF or JPEG format file. If the georeferencing information cannot
be automatically imported from the image file, the user may wish to obtain
the georeferencing information contained in a separate file, gloria.txt,
in the data/imagery/raw and data/imagery/enhanced directory.
