We acknowledge the skilled help of the crew of the R/V FARNELLA
for their assistance in the collection of the SeaMARC sidescan sonar imagery
and the cores. Numerous colleagues from the US Geological Survey
participated in the cruises, and assisted in the collection and processing
of both the imagery and the core data. Their names are listed in
the cruise report found on this CD-ROM. We thank Mike Williamson
and his staff from Williamson and Associates who operated the SeaMARC 1A
sidescan sonar system so effectively. Thomas Krook of the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution deployed and operated the acoustic navigation
system which was used to navigate both the sidescan system and the cores
in parts of the study area. This navigation system allowed
the cores to be precisely located relative to the sidescan imagery.
Field descriptions of the cores were completed by Hans Nelson (USGS) and
Neil Kenyon (Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, UK), and X-rays and textural
sampling of the cores were completed by Jana DaSilva (USGS). We also
would like to extend our thanks to Michael Parsley of the Biological Resources
Division of the USGS who introduces us to the idea of having the metadata
reports linked directly to the GIS for ready access of this information.
Flat World Technologies (www.spatial-online.com)
provided the free utility, EvokeBrowser, that was modified to allow the
hotlink associated with the cores to open in the Windows system default
browser. Reviews of this Open-File Report were completed by Larry Poppe and
Jim Robb.
