Abstract:
This CD-ROM releases data that were used in several publications dealing with processes associated with recent deposition on the Mississippi Fan. Because of the interest in the findings of this work amongst geologists it seemed appropriate to make the data and not just the summary interpretive reports available to the scientific community.
Purpose:
This CD-ROM contains 25 m SeaMARC 1A and GLORIA sidescan sonar mosaic for the Mississippi Fan study area. Also included are GIS layers of the researcher's interpretation of the depositional units and meandering channel.


Field descriptions and visual summaries of collected cores are also available. Portions of some cores were x-rayed and are also included. The core locations, visual summaries and x-rays have been incorporated in the GIS portion of this data release.

Grain-size measurement of many of the cores were completed. This information has been summarized and is available in several forms (HTML, EXCEL).

For the USGS, the GIS software is Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI) associated products. GIS data on this disk have been archived in the ArcView shapefile format. Imagery has been archived in GEOTIFF format with an associated "world" file and ASCII text file describing the image georeferencing information. All data presented on this CD-ROM are intended to be GIS-ready in as much as the data should not require any additional cleanup, formatting, renaming of fields or other "data work" to use the data in the GIS of choice. This does not mean that the user will not wish to do additional processing, especially if they are utilizing a different GIS software package or spheroid, but that it is not necessary to do additional processing simply to utilize the data in its minimum archive format.
