Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

    Title: NEST98PTS_SP
    Abstract:
NEST98PTS_SP is a point coverage containing digital hydrographic data from off the coast of Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon, USA. The horizontal datum is Washington State Plane South, Zone 5626 meters. The data set includes National Ocean Service (NOS) hydrographic surveys collected between the 1926 and 1928, surveys collected in 1998 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) around the entrances to Grays Harbor, Willapa Bay, and the Columbia River, and additional data fabricated by the author in order to generate smooth transitions between the data sets. The user is cautioned, to use this data set with full knowledge of the original intent the limitations, and assumptions used to generate it.
    Supplemental_Information:
The SWCES was initiated to examine coastal geology, processes, and natural hazards within the Columbia River littoral cell. The study is jointly directed by the U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Geology Program and the Washington State Department of Ecology Shorelands and Environmental Assistance Program, with active participation of local communities in Pacific and Grays Harbor counties. Related USGS work in the Southwest Washington Coastal Erosion Study can be found online at: <http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/sea/swce/>

The data described here are part of a data release of sixteen bathymetric surface grids. These include: 1926 regional and study area grids and 1926-1998 merged regional and study area grids, each at 500m and 750m grid spacing, in UTM(m) and Washington State Plane(m) projections. The regional data set extends from near Heceta Head, Oregon to Cape Johnson, Washington, from the shoreline to about -2000m; the study area data set extends from Tillamook Head Oregon to Pt. Grenville WA, from the shore to approx. ~-700m water depth. Please refer to Gibbs, 2000 for details.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

The data have been thoroughly analyzed for for gross inaccuracies. A discussion of errors and accuracies associated with the original data collection methodologies can be found in Gibbs and Gelfenbaum (1999).

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Horizontal accuracies for NOS surveys vary by water depth and distance from shore (see Gibbs and Gelfenbaum, 1999). Modern ACE surveys used DGPS and RTK positioning and have an accuracy of less than one meter.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

Vertical accuracies for NOS surveys vary by water depth and distance from shore (see Gibbs and Gelfenbaum, 1999). Modern ACE surveys used single-beam digital fathometers, RTK tides, heave and swell compensator, and have an accuracy of less than one/half meter.

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Gaps in the hydrographic survey point data exists west of Willapa Bay from approximately -124.034 to -124.363 degrees longitude and 46.573 to 46.738 degrees latitude and northwest of Tillamook Bay from approximately -123.834 to -124.120 longitude and 45.472 to 45.626 latitude. The remaining data are considered complete.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Only NOS sounding data with an original cartographic code of 711 are included. The data set was rigorously edited of obviously erroneous points.
