Edition: Version 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map and text Series_Information: Series_Name: Open-File Report Issue_Identification: OF2000-XXXX Online_Linkage: http://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/maps/ofrs.html Description: Abstract: Mining claim density data for GMUG National Forest, Colorado, was excerpted from a statewide dataset published by Hyndman and Campbell as Open-File Report 99-410. These data quantify the status of mining claim activity for 1996 and include information on mining claim activity since 1976. This digital map is not to be considered as a legal representation of survey lines and corners or of mining claim boundaries although it was derived from the Public Lands Survey (PLS). The data are aggregated by section. Purpose: Mining claim density for GMUG, excerpted from Hyndman and Campbell, is included because it provides information that supplements and compliments the mineralized areas and the mines and prospects information. Claim density is depicted by shading or coloring the sections according to the numbers or types of claims within the mostly rectangular sections. Because mine and prospect information is inconsistent across the study area, the claim density information occasionally provided indication of mineral interests where no mines and prospects are known. Supplemental_Information: The original data were in Arc/Info 7.1 format. These were converted to .e00 format, and imported into MapInfo Professional version 5.5. The Arc/Info export and ArcView files in this release were created in MapInfo using the ArcLink and Universal Translator, respectively. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) makes no warranties related to the accuracy of the data and users are required to determine suitability of use for any particular purpose. This digital map is not to be construed as a legal representation of mining claim boundaries. The Public Lands Survey (PLS) data is assumed to be from 1:100,000 scale base maps. The map should not be used at scales larger than 1:100,000. The user must obtain current information on mining claims from the Colorado State Office of the Bureau of Land Management for the area of interest since the mining claim density data is not current. The information in the database does not provide the legal location or status of individual mining claims. Any hard copies utilizing this data set shall clearly indicate this source. If the user modifies the data in any way, (s)he is obligated to describe the types of modifications performed on the hard copy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent this data set, nor imply that changes were approved by the USGS. In order to count each claim only once, the first section listed in the BLM database for a particular claim was chosen as the section in which the claim was counted by Hyndman and Campbell (1999). No attempt was made to verify the accuracy of their database, nor to check these data against their dataset. Any questions pertaining to accuracy should be referred to Hyndman and Campbell (1999). Professional v. 5.5, trimmed to the study area boundary. The .e00 and .shp files in this release were exported from MapInfo. No other data checking was attempted. Completeness_Report: The data set is a spatially derived subset of Hyndman and Campbell's (1999) data based on data available to them from the BLM as of 1996. More recent data may be available from the BLM. No other modifications were made.
