This dataset contains elevation data above and below sealevel for the the greater Monterey Bay area between Point Ano Nuevo to the north and Point Sur to the south. BATTOPOG is a 30-meter grid of offshore bathymetry and onshore topography assembled from USGS Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/National Ocean Service (NOS) data. BATTOPSD.TIF is a shaded relief version of BATTOPOG converted to a TIFF image.
This is one of a collection of digital files of a geographic information system of spatially referenced data related to the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program "Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Project" <http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/mbms>. The data were collected and analyzed between 1994 and 2000.

This is a Raster data set. It contains the following raster data types:
Planar coordinates are encoded using coordinate pair
Abscissae (x-coordinates) are specified to the nearest 30.0
Ordinates (y-coordinates) are specified to the nearest 30.0
Planar coordinates are specified in Meters
The horizontal datum used is North American Datum of 1983.
The ellipsoid used is GRS1980.
The semi-major axis of the ellipsoid used is 6378137.0.
The flattening of the ellipsoid used is 1/298.257.
BATTOPOG is an ArcInfo grid with the following attributes:

These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. The data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software to display geologic and oceanographic information about the shallower areas of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

F.L. Wong: Applied low-pass filter (Arc: FILTER, 2 iterations) to bathymetry grid to smooth data. Resampled bathymetry to 30 m cell size and converted to integer grid BATIG.
Converted elevation grid SFBR-EL north of latitude 37 North (Graham and Pike, 1998) from datum NAD27 to NAD83 and z-units from decimeters to meters. Similarly converted Monterey elevation grid (Ramsey, 1997).
In study window, built a grid mask enclosed by the coastline and the scratch boundary. With mask active, merged Point Sur, Monterey, and SFBR-EL 30-m grids as TOPOG. Converted TOPOG from floating point to integer grid TOPOIG.
Merged TOPOIG and BATIG as BATTOPOG. Applied shading scheme (Mark, 1992) to grid to produce shaded relief grid BATTOPOSHDG Converted battoposhdg to TIFF image BATTOPSD.TIF.
