Large time gaps (for example, 10 minutes) in the the best_nav_file provide a means of breaking up the the continuous navigation record to omit transit lines or periods during which no data was collected. User-supplied or additional start- and end-of-line times may be available for each of the data collections systems (for example, bathymetry, gravity, sidescan). The ASCII text data were converted to an ArcInfo route system with line and point events using elapsed cruise time in seconds as the route measure. These in turn were converted to ArcInfo line and point coverages. If there is a navigation coverage name ending in TM, the file contains the navigation lines with calculated gaps and location points at one-minute time intervals; the companion 6-character file contains a subset of line segments with start- and end-of-line times that were user-designated.
