INTRODUCTION The beaches of the State of Hawaii are an important economic resource for the burgeoning tourist industry, provide a natural buffer that protects the coast during storms, and are culturally significant to the people of Hawaii. Coastal erosion is widespread and locally severe in Hawaii. Dramatic examples of coastal erosion, such as houses and roads falling into the sea, are rare in Hawaii, but the impact of erosion is still a serious problem. Researchers report that approximately 25 percent of the beaches on Oahu and about 30 percent on Maui have disappeared in the last century because of erosion. In an effort better to understand Hawaiian beach systems, a cooperative study between the State of Hawaii (Univ. of Hawaii) and the U.S. Geological Survey was developed in 1994. As part of the study, a program of beach and nearshore monitoring was initiated on the islands of Maui and Oahu. Between 1994 and 1999, five years of biannual (approx. summer/winter) profiles were collected on the islands. This interactive CD-ROM contains the cross-shore beach profile data, location maps, and detailed site descriptions from 36 Maui and 42 Oahu beaches. A summary of the project, list of participants, and a list of published papers and abstracts related to the project are also included. DATA FORMAT Profile data on this CD-ROM are presented in both Microsoft Excel 97/98 & 5.0/95 Workbook (.xls) format and comma separated value (.csv) format. Graphical representation of the surveys (x vs. z and x vs. y) are presented in Excel format only. Site descriptions, including beach location, directions to site, GPS information, and a description of Reference Points used, are available in both Excel and PDF format.
