This is a Vector data set. It contains the following vector data types (SDTS terminology):
Horizontal positions are specified in geographic coordinates, that is, latitude and longitude. Latitudes are given to the nearest 0.000089992. Longitudes are given to the nearest 0.000089992. Latitude and longitude values are specified in Decimal degrees.
The horizontal datum used is North American Datum of 1927.
The ellipsoid used is Clarke 1866.
The semi-major axis of the ellipsoid used is 6378206.4.
The flattening of the ellipsoid used is 1/294.98.

These bottom photographs, video, and sediment texture data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey on four different research cruises. Bradford Butman was chief scientist on the RV Alpha and Omega, Oceanus, and Endeavor cruises. William Schwab led the Seaward Explorer cruise. Dann Blackwood was responsible for maintaining and running the camera systems at sea. Marilyn Buchholtz ten Brink and Ellen Mecray were responsible for sediment sampling. Ben Gutierrez compiled the photographs and did the initial report layout. Donna Newman edited the report for compliance with USGS publication standards. Tammie Middleton did the metadata.

The data were collected as part of studies to map the sea floor (Butman and others (1998), Butman (2002)) and to develop an understanding of the transport and long-term fate of sediments and associated contaminants in the New York Bight (Mecray and others, 1999). The images and texture data were collected to provide direct observations of the sea floor geology and to aid in the interpretation of backscatter intensity data obtained from sidescan sonar and multibeam surveys of the sea floor.
The locations of the station location, sediment sample location, photograph location, and video location were determined using a differential Global Positionning System (GPS). The grain size charactersitcs were measured in the laboratory using methods described in the U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 00-358 by L.J. Poppe and C.F. Polloni.
These data were navigated with a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS); they are accurate to about +/- 3 meters, horizontally.
