Open File Report 01-318 is a CD-ROM containing an ArcView project, and related supporting documentation.

The following are three graphic images generated from ArcView coverages in .

    1. Coal Mines, Coal Fields, and Coal-Bearing Age Units in the People's Republic of China

    2. High Fluoride Pollution Sources in the People's Republic of China

    3. Prevalence Rates of Dental Fluorosis in the People's Republic of China

Included on the CD-ROM are:

  • ArcView Project File (.apr) in \China

  •
  •  ArcView Shape files (.shp) in China\Arc\Shapefiles

  •
  •  Metadata (.met) and other supporting documentation (.htm)  for the Shape Files in China\Arc\Metadata

  •
  •  Acrobat Portable Document File (.pdf) for the CD-ROM in China\Pdf

  •
  •  Encapsulated Postscript files (.eps) in China\eps

  •
  •  Acrobat 5.0 Reader in China\Acrobat_reader

  •
  •  ArcExplorer 2.0 in China\Arc_explorer

  ----------------------------------------------------------------------

The digital data on the CD-ROM can be viewed in three different formats:

 ESRI ArcView (.shp) files
The ESRI ArcView .shp files are the coverages of political boundaries, counties, provinces, cities, urban areas, airfields, roads, railroads, electrical power network, river networks, ecoregions, population density, dental fluorosis prevalence rates, elevated flouride sources, ore deposits, oil & gas fields, coal-bearing age units, coal fields, coal mine  production and rank, and geology (scale 1:10000000).

The ArcView project file is in the \China directory.  The project files have the .shp files incorporated into two views:

 1. Geology and Natural Resources
 2. Human Health and Environment

The ArcView project is viewable if you have ArcView 3.1 or later installed on the machine on which the data is to be viewed on.

ArcExplorer has been included on this CD for users without access to ArcView.
ArcExplorer can be used to view the ArcView shapefiles included on this CD-ROM.
A self-executing installation program for ArcExplorer is included in /China/arc_explorer/ae2setup.exe.
Instructions for installing and using ArcExplorer are included in /China/arc_explorer/arcexplorer.pdf.

Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (.pdf) files
The files with the .pdf extension can be found in the  \China\pdf directory.  There are three files that contain
graphic images generated from coverages in ArcView. The  .pdf images are as follows:

    1. "\China\pdf\layout_1_coal_mines_fields.pdf" - Coalfields, Coal Mines, and Coal-Bearing Age Units in the People's Republic of China

    2. "\China\pdf\layout_2_flouride_pollution.pdf" - High Fluoride
Pollution Sources in the People's Republic of China

    3. "\China\pdf\layout_3_dental_fluorosis.pdf" - Prevalence Rates of Dental Fluorosis in the People's Republic of China

Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or better is necessary to view the .pdf files.  If you do not have Acrobat Reader 4.0 or better installed on your computer,  it is available in the \China\acrobat_reader folder on this CD-ROM.  If this version does not work on your machine,  you can download a copy from the Adobe web site
    (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html).

 Encapsulated Postscript (.eps) Files
The files with the .eps extension can be found in the  \China\eps directory.  There are three files that contain
graphic images generated from coverages in ArcView. The graphic files can be loaded into graphics software or printed on an eps compatible plotter.  The eps images are as follows:

    1. "\China\pdf\layout_1_coal_mines_fields.eps" - Coalfields, Coal Mines, and Coal-Bearing Age Units in the People's Republic of China

    2. "\China\pdf\layout_2_flouride_pollution.eps" - High Fluoride Pollution Sources in the People's Republic of China

    3. "\China\pdf\layout_3_dental_fluorosis.eps" - Prevalence Rates of Dental Fluorosis in the People's Republic of China

Metadata and other supporting documentation (.met, .htm) files
Metadata files and other support documents with .met, and .htm  extensions can be found in the \Arc\Metadata directory.  Each file contains metadata or supporting information for .shp files with the same corresponding name in the \Arc\Shapefiles directory.
