0 - 478 cm - Dark olive gray, 5Y 5/2, firm sandy silt and clay. Scattered sand patches throughout; sand content increases down - section; 5 cm diameter sand patch at 178 cm. Shell fragments at 66 cm, 295 cm, 390 cm; whole, large (6 cm) mercenaria clam and large (3.5 cm)
clast at 468 cm (sediment removed from around clam shell and retained in sample bay). Faint mottling at 110 - 150 cm, 180 - 210 cm, 310 - 353 cm; large, diagonal mottled zone at 380 - 390 cm; color gray 5Y 5/1. 165 cm: large (7 cm) "concretion" ( - ); inclusion consists of very hard - packed matrix sediment (silt and clay) and shell fragments. Sharp, irregular lower contact.
478 - 513 cm - Firm silt and sand. Sand: dark grayish brown, 10YR 3/2; silt: dark olive gray, 5Y 3/2; overall patchy, mottled appearance. Bottom few cm: sand, silt, and 2 - 3 cm clast - size gravel. Contact with overlying unit marked by dark, organic material (or staining of sediment). Organic material persist for 11 cm below contact in an irregular pattern.
