Explanation of Tables 1 - 6: MMI Assignments

MMI values were assigned according to the descriptions of Wood and Neumann (1931) and current USGS NEIC practice for assigning MMI (Stover and Coffman, 1993). The MMI are listed by state, and then by city, in chronological order. The MMI for the November 18, 1755 earthquake near Cape Ann, Massachusetts (Table 1) were assigned by M. G. Hopper using descriptions in WEGE (1977). The MMI for the January 5, 1843 earthquake near Marked Tree, Arkansas (Table 2) were assigned by M. G. Hopper using unpublished USGS NEIC data. The MMI for the October 31,1895 earthquake in southern Illinois (Table 3) were assigned by M. G. Hopper using descriptions in Hopper and Algermissen (1980). The MMI for the November 18, 1929 Grand Banks, Newfoundland earthquake (Table 4) were assigned for sites in the United States by M. G. Hopper and for sites in Canada by Anne E. Stevens of the Geological Survey of Canada (personal communication, 2000). The MMI for the September 26, 1990 in southeast Missouri (Table 5) and for the May 4, 1991 near Risco, Missouri (Table 6) were assigned by M. G. Hopper using unpublished USGS NEIC data.
