The geology of the Frederick 30 by 60 minute quadrangle, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, was mapped on 1:24,000-scale base maps from 1989 to 1994. The geologic data were manually compiled at 1:100,000-scale in 1997 and were digitized and converted to Arc/Info GIS coverages from 1998 to 1999.
The geologic map and database are intended for application to land use decisions, soil mapping, groundwater availability and quality, aggregate resources, and engineering and environmental studies. For site specific studies, the detailed 1:24,000-scale geologic maps should be consulted.
Geologic data are stored in eleven GIS themes: A-A' and B-B' cross sections, bedrock, dikes, faults, lakebeds, thermally metamorphosed rocks, map neat line, sinkholes, structural, and surficial. Base data are stored in five GIS themes: hydrology, land cover, political boundaries, roads, and elevation contours.

Digital Line Graphs are digital vector representations of cartographic information derived from USGS maps and related sources.
These geologic map data were digitized from hand drafted stable-base scribe sheets used to prepare the Frederick 30 X 60 minute quadrangle. Scribe sheets were scanned, vectorized and then converted to GIS compatible formats.
1998-1999
Land cover data sets for the states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were obtained from http://edc.usgs.gov/geodata. The data were combined into one raster grid using Arc/Info GIS software. Land cover data within the boundary of the Frederick 30 X 60 minute quadrangle were extracted from the larger grid for inclusion in this Open-File Report. The resultant grid was reprojected from the Albers Conical Equal Area projection to the Universal Transverse Mercator System and to the Geographic Reference System.
2002
Hydrography, hypsography, political boundaries, and roads Digital Line Graph (DLG) layers were obtained from http://edc.usgs.gov/geodata for the Frederick 30 X 60 minute quadrangle. The roads layer was filtered to contain only major highways. The layers were reprojected from the Universal Transverse Mercator System to the Geographic Reference System.
