Bathymetric and geophysical surveys of Englebright Lake, Yuba-Nevada Counties, California

Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title:
Bathymetric and geophysical surveys of Englebright Lake, Yuba-Nevada Counties, California
Abstract:
A new bathymetric map of Englebright Lake, Yuba-Nevada Counties, California is compared to 1939 elevations captured from a pre-dam topographic survey to determine how much sediment has accumulated in the reservoir in the past 60 years. A longitudinal profile along the entire length (thalweg) of the reservoir and cross-sections across the reservoir at seven points illustrate the pre-dam and present bottom profiles. Calculations of the total volume of sediment impounded by the dam for eight regions of the reservoir are presented.

Why was the data set created?

These data are intended for science researchers, policy makers, and the general public.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 10-Aug-2003 (process 1 of 1)
The bathymetry data were collected along continuous boat tracks at a 2 second sample interval. Pre-dam topography was digitized from archival survey records. Bathymetric and elevation models were created at 5-meter grid cell, and the models differenced to calculate sediment thickness and volume.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

Data have not been independently verified.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

    1.0 meters

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

One percent (1%) of the water depth for bathymetry; 10 feet for pre-dam topography and sediment thickness.

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Reference the report for a description of the bathymetric survey and pre-dam topography model.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

    Undetermined
