Notes:

  1. Listed are summary statistics for the three principal databases of the GIS Surface Effects Map Archive. The databases contain all surface effects maps for detonations conducted in the Yucca Flat, Pahute Mesa, and Other testing areas of the NTS. Given for each testing area and feature type are: (1) Number of features, (2) Cumulative Length (all features of each type), and (3) Maximum Length (length of longest feature of each type). Lengths are provided in both feet and meters. The total number of features and cumulative lengths are given for each testing area (subtotals) and for all three testing areas (totals).

  2. Sink (symbol) and Sink within sink (symbol) are hachure marks for “Sink” and “Sink within sink” features, respectively. Summary statistics for the symbols are separated from the actual mapped surface effects and not included in the subtotal given for each testing area; however, the totals do include these symbol features.

  3. How to separate the sink features and sink symbols: Sink features and sink symbols are both identified as Feature type “Sink” in the GIS databases. Similarly, sink within sink features and sink within sink symbols are identified as Feature type “Sink within sink.” The distinguishing characteristic is that sink symbol and sink within sink symbol features have the attribute “Symbol (sink hachure)” in the Label field of the databases. This unique identifier can be used to differentiate these symbol features from collapse sinks for mapping and analysis operations.
