5th to 15th (Odd layers only) Layers of Lead Bricks for Gamma-Ray Castle
(as viewed from above with front of castle at bottom)
The body of the castle is made up of 11 alternating layers of bricks (shown here in blue) and has a 16" by 16" opening which forms the interior of the castle. The body walls are 8" thick. The floor of the castle (shown here in magenta) is the third layer. Each body layer requires 24 standard-sized bricks. NOTE: The layout shown here is for layers 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 of the castle body. Click here to view the layout of lead bricks for the even layers.
NOTE: A 5/8" thick aluminum plate is placed on top of the final layer forming the body of the castle. The plate is 32" by 32" square and a one inch hole is drilled through the center of the plate to allow passage of the cable from the photomultiplier tube to the PC. Three additional layers of lead bricks form the roof of the castle, which are stacked on top of the aluminum plate.
