The map was made using 1:6000-scale color, stereo aerial photographs, surveyed ground-control points, and a Kern DSR-11 analytical stereo plotter. The contour interval is 2 m. Purpose: The purpose of the map is to show the topography of the continuously moving Slumgullion landslide on July 31, 2000. The topographic map may be used by on-going and future scientific studies of the landslide. Supplemental_Information: GEOSPATIAL DATAFILES AND OTHER FILES INCLUDE IN THE DATA SET: slumcontln(.shp): contour line features slumcontpt(.shp): point features and spot elevations Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government. Although this Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata file is intended to document the data set in nonproprietary form, as well as in ARC/INFO format, this metadata file may include some ARC/INFO-specific terminology. GIS data attributes were checked by technician for accuracy. Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon attributes, and other errors. Automated (ARC/INFO) routines were used to check the databases for polygon label errors, line or point attribution errors, sliver polygons, dangling arcs, intersection errors, and projection information. The map was reviewed by other geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. Completeness_Report: Project Complete. Contours were mapped using a 2-meter contour interval. Spot Elevations were added where needed. Bodies of water were drawn as observed on 1:6,000 scale color aerial photos. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Aerial Photos were registered to the Colorado State Plane Coordinate System using surveyed ground control points. The estimated horizontal accuracy of the ground control points was +/- 2 cm. Forty control points were used to register the photographs to the ground (fig. 2). Nineteen of the points were on non-moving ground and served as the primary control points to register the photographs. Twenty-one of the points were on moving ground and served as supplemental control points (usually for elevation control only). The control points were surveyed by rapid-static GPS survey on July 24-26, 2000. The positions of all the points were surveyed in the World Geodetic System 1984 with heights given as ellipsoid heights (see Van Sickle, 1996). Prior to using the points to register the photographs, the point positions were transformed and projected (using Prism v. 2.1 software by Ashtech, Inc.) into the Colorado State Plane (southern zone) coordinate system with heights converted to elevation above mean sea level in the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (table 1). Therefore, coordinates shown on the map are in the Colorado State Plane coordinate system and heights are elevations above sea level. All units shown on the map are meters. The contour interval is 2 m. Previous topographic maps of the landslide are in a local coordinate system (fig. 2) established by David Varnes in the early 1990s (Varnes and others, 1996).
