SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION:

Sample was collected from the edge of a pond on the tailings pile at the Summitville Mine during the summer of 1993. The sample was of a waste product generated during water de-acidification of mine waste water. The sample was transported and dumped on the tailings pile for containment.

SPECTROSCOPIC_DISCUSSION:

The spectrum of the dried sludge has very strong nearly saturated Fe-absorptions at 0.4954 and 0.9556 microns. The rest of the spectrum is dominated by broad water absorptions. There is a weak vibrational absorption at 2.255 microns. The spectrum of the moist sample has very low reflectance (mostly < 10%) and the same features as the dried sample but with very strong water absorption features superimposed. The 2.255 micron absorption is lost in the noise and broad saturated water absorption at wavelengths longer than 1.9 microns.
