DOCUMENTATION_FORMAT: MINERAL

SAMPLE_ID: GDS33

MINERAL_TYPE: Oxide

MINERAL: Europium_Oxide

FORMULA: Eu2O3

FORMULA_HTML: Eu2O3

COLLECTION_LOCALITY: Synthetic

ORIGINAL_DONOR: Spex Standard Reagent Grade, Lot #03811

CURRENT_SAMPLE_LOCATION: USGS Denver Spectroscopy Laboratory

ULTIMATE_SAMPLE_LOCATION: USGS Denver Spectroscopy Laboratory

SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION:

Reagent grade Eu-oxide, 83.6 % Eu, Lot #03811

END_SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION.

XRD_ANALYSIS:

40 kV - 30 mA, 6.5-9.5 keV
File: euoxid33.mdi (smear mount on quartz plate)
References: JCPDS #18-507, 34-72, 34-392A
Found: Eu2O3 cubic
Sought but not found: EuO and Eu2O3 monoclinic

Comment: Peaks are broad, ragged, and there is no resolution of the alpha1-alpha2 reflections, indicating poor crystallinity. Reflections with intensities <10% of the chart width (about 20 counts) are very poorly resolved. Most peak positions and relative intensities match those of JC-PDS #34-392A, but two very weak reflections at 2.79 and 2.81 angstroms could not be indexed. There are two unindexed maxima in the strip chart (at 2.93 and 3.85 angstroms) that are so weak that they may not be significant peaks.
