SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION:
0-16. Zincite (plus Franklinite). Franklin, N.J. (147B). Zincite, ZnO, is a very rare mineral found in large amounts exclusively at Franklin, N.J., intimately intergrown with franklinite. The chemical formula for franklinite is usually written ZnFe2O4, but shows variations in composition indicated by the more typical formula (Fe, Zn, Mn) (Fe, Mn)2O4. Both zincite and franklinite are highly colored, the zincite possibly by the manganese ion (Palache et al., 1944), the franklinite primarily by the ferric ion. Both the ferrous and ferric ions are primarily responsible for the fall- off in reflectivity towards the blue and for the crossover for different particle size samples. The band at 1.15µ is due to the Fe2+ ion, and at 0.8µ to Fe3+, both of which locate easily in the host zinc oxide crystal and are most marked in the finer particle size. The fall-off in reflectivity is caused by a combination of the presence of ferrous and ferric ion, intrinsic absorption and a tailing off of the zinc oxide conduction band into the visible range."
Sieve interval 74 - 250µm.
