Update: World Coal Quality Inventory -- Argentina

By William E. Brooks and Jason C. Willett

Photograph showing rural use of coal in a stove at a ranch near Rio Turbio   Coal samples have been obtained from major and minor coal-producing regions around the world. Coal quality data derived from analyses of these samples have been included in the U.S. Geological Survey's World Coal Quality Inventory or WoCQI. Coal resources in South America are limited, and this extensive region has only ~0.5% of the world's supply of coal. Occurrences of coal and other organic-enriched strata such as bituminous schists and lignite, are widely distributed in Argentina; however, Argentina ranks 34th worldwide in coal reserves. Argentine coal is now used mainly for metallurgy and minor rural domestic use.
