Description:
Abstract:
This map portrays the geology of part of the Midcontinent rift system
(MRS) along the southern extension of the Lake Superior syncline in northern
Wisconsin. The map area contains the St. Croix horst, a rift graben filled with
Mesoproterozoic rocks of the Keweenawan Supergroup that was subsequently
inverted. The horst exposes about 15 - 20 km of strata that record the opening
of the Midcontinent rift, its subsequent transition to a thermal subsidence
basin, and eventual inversion. About 3 km of underlying Mesoproterozoic strata,
including the Gogebic iron range, and about 10 km of Neoarchean rocks, exposed
in the southernmost part of the map area lie to the southeast of the horst.
The nearly flat-lying continental red beds of the Oronto and Bayfield
Groups, the youngest strata of the Keweenawan Supergroup, overlie the volcanic
rocks.
A wealth of geologic data exists for the area as a result of many
individual studies over the last hundred years, but much has remained
unpublished in theses, dissertations, and other reports of limited availability.
This map has incorporated most of that data (see list of data sources) and
includes results of our investigations conducted from 1992 to 2000. Our studies
were designed to fill gaps in existing data and reconcile conflicting
interpretations on some aspects of the geology of the region.
Purpose:
The purpose of this map is to complete digital coverage of
quadrangles with significant exposure of rocks of the Midcontinent rift in
Wisconsin and Michigan at a scale of 1:100,000. Other maps in this series
include the bedrock geologic maps of the Ontonagon-Wakefield, the
Ashland-Ironwood, and the Keweenaw Peninsula areas (USGS Open-File Reports
01-088, 99-546, and 99-149, respectively).
Supplemental_Information:
The coverages included are as follows: geology,
faults, outcrops, structure, drill_holes, county_lines, xsect_line, form_lines,
rock_quarries, age_dates, and xsect_geology.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Linework was captured by hand digitizing hand-drawn geology from paper
1:24,000 and 1:100,000 scale topographic map bases. Vector and polygon
attributes were obtained from field maps and observations and other sources.
Linear features were compiled from field maps and inferred from aeromagnetic
data and seismic reflection lines.
The locations of the radiometric age samples and other geochemical
samples were obtained by heads-up digitizing field station locations on field
maps. Mineral deposits and quarries were located by heads-up digitzing from
descriptions and maps in several reports.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All internal polygons were checked for closure
with vendor software and on hard copy plots. Overshoots and undershoots have
been deleted or corrected as appropriate.
Completeness_Report:
Although, the coverage of the cross section A to A'
(xsect_geology) contain attributes and georeferencing information, they are not
true geographic data. Rather, they were structured as coverages to allow
correct scaling and positioning with respect to map view data. This allows the
user to view the cross sections in relation to the geologic units.

Location of outcrops were compiled from many sources of paper maps at
various
scales. They were compiled onto paper copies of 1:100,000 topographic
maps and
heads-up digitized onto digital raster graphics files of the
quadrangles. Additional
outcrops were located during field studies and compiled on 1:24,000
and 1:100,000
topographic maps. These also were digitized by heads-up method onto
digital
raster graphic 1:100,000 topographic maps.
Geology lines and faults were interpreted from outcrop and geophysical
data and
were drawn digitally.
Converted shapefile to a coverage and extended the lines to create a
polygon
coverage. Built the coverage to create topology. Polygons were
checked for
closure. Added ID to the polygon attribute table. Tagged each
polygon with the
corresponding id and joined an attribute table to the ID field.
Exported file as
geology.e00.

Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
These data were compiled using ArcInfo, a product of ESRI
(http://www.esri.com/), consequently the feature attribute
tables contain additional data fields that are used by the
GIS software to keep track of the topological relationships
among features. These administrative data fields are here
described using the printed output of ArcInfo.
