NR_BASEMAP.IMG - A mosaic of digital raster graphic (DRG) images was created from both 1:250,000-scale and 100,000-scale imagery to provide a topographic base map for the NR_GEO geologic map spatial database. The scale of the constituent parts of the mosaic represent the scale at which the geology (provided in NR_GEO) was compiled.
Purpose:
The mosaicked ERDAS IMAGINE® file, NR_BASEMAP.IMG, was created to provide a single raster image file in the Albers Equal Area map projection for use in a geographic information system (GIS) as a topographic base map for the Northern Rocky Mountain geologic spatial database, NR_GEO.

This mosaicked image contains information from 1:100,000-scale DRG images for the Big Timber, Coeur d'Alene, Elk City, Ennis, Gardiner, Grangeville, Hamilton, Headquarters, Hebgen Lake, Idaho City, Kooskia, Leadore, Lima, Livingston, Missoula West, Nez Perce Pass, Red Lodge, Riggins, Rosalia, Spokane, St. Maries, Thompson Falls, and Wallace quadrangles and 1:250,000-scale DRG images for the Bozeman, Butte, Challis, Choteau, Cut Bank, Dillon, Hailey, Idaho Falls, Kalispell, Pullman, Sandpoint, Wallace, and White Sulfur Springs quadrangles.

HOW TO VIEW NR_BASEMAP.IMG WITH NR_GEO IN ESRI® ArcMap? 9.0 Two settings can be adjusted in the properties of NR_BASEMAP.IMG image while in the ArcMap? environment to make it a more effective tool: the transparency and the color options. First, in order to view NR_GEO and NR_BASEMAP.IMG simultaneously, one theme needs to be semi-transparent. We recommend applying transparency to NR_BASEMAP.IMG. To do so, add NR_BASEMAP.IMG to an ArcMap? document already containing NR_GEO and organize the layers in the Table of Contents so that the basemap (NR_BASEMAP.IMG) is above the geology spatial database (NR_GEO). Then adjust the display transparency setting number for NR_BASEMAP.IMG to 50%. Second, NR_BASEMAP.IMG color values need to be adjusted so that its colors will not conflict with the colors assigned to the geology in NR_GEO. Two color values need to be set to null. A null setting maintains the color value but renders the area transparent. Setting color value 1 (white) and 5 (green - vegetation) to null will allow map features, such as contours, roads, section lines, and others, to appear visible over the geology, yet they will not interfere with the intentional symbology of the spatial database.

The NR_BASEMAP.IMG file should be used as a topographic base map for the NR_GEO spatial database. Those parts of the image that were derived from 1:100,000-scale topographic maps should be used or displayed at that scale, but not at a larger scale (for example 1:50,000). Similarly, those portions of the image that were derived from 1:250,000-scale topographic maps should be used or displayed at a scale of 1:250,000, but not at a larger scale (for example 1:100,000). Any hardcopies utilizing these datasets shall clearly indicate their source. If the user has modified the data in any way, they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these data sets, nor imply that changes they made were approved by the U.S. Geological Survey.

A DRG is an 8-bit color image that employs a color palette to ensure uniform colors throughout a particular DRG series. All DRG images within this series have the same RGB values.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The base map image consists of mosaicked DRG images of 1:000,000 and 1:250,000 scales; therefore, there is no homogeneous overall scale to this base map. To be consistent with the geologic map used to compile NR_GEO, NR_BASEMAP.IMG combines DRG images that reflect the same scale as the base map on which the geologic map was compiled. Consequently, the scale will vary.
Completeness_Report:
The NR_BASEMAP.IMG file contains topographic information from 1:250,000-scale and 1:100,000-scale DRG image files for the entire area represented by the NR_GEO spatial database. Each DRG is a faithfully reproduced raster image of the original source topographic map: data completeness for the DRG file reflects content of the source raster data. Gaps along the seamline between the Kalispell 1:250,000-scale DRG and Cutbank 1:250,000-scale DRG are due to the original DRG images not matching up to one another and cannot be corrected. The base map includes 1:100,000-scale topologic information for the Big Timber, Coeur d' Alene, Elk City, Ennis, Gardiner, Grangeville, Hamilton, Headquarters, Hebgen Lake, Idaho City, Kooskia, Leadore, Lima, Livingston, Missoula West, Nez Perce Pass, Red Lodge, Riggins, Rosalia, Spokane, Saint Maries, Thompson Falls, and Wallace quadrangles and 1:250,000-scale topologic information for the Bozeman, Butte, Challis, Choteau, Cut Bank, Dillon, Hailey, Idaho Falls, Kalispell, Pullman, Sandpoint, Wallace and White Sulfur Springs quadrangles.

INTRODUCTION Many processing steps were completed for each of the forty-three map tiles obtained from twenty-eight source-map DRG images prior to mosaicking them into a single personal geodatabase. All of the source-map DRG files were acquired in TIFF format, and all spatial processing was performed with ESRI® ArcGIS® products (version 9.0) and ArcView® 3.2. The DRG maps used in the base map incorporate a scale of either 1:100,000 or 1:250,000. The DRG map scales reflect the same scale as the base of the original geologic maps used to create the NR_GEO geologic spatial database.

CONVERTED TIFF FILES TO GRID FILES Each of the images was opened one at a time in ArcView® 3.2 with the extensions Grid Tools (Jenness Enterprises) and Grid PIG Tools v2.6 enabled. Under 'Theme', each TIFF was converted to grid format to facilitate clipping using the 'Convert to grid' command.

CLIPPED THE GRID FILES Each DRG image was clipped to eliminate the overlap that results from excess border area around each image. This border region manifests itself as an artifact borne from the rotation caused by projecting a quadrangle, or as a rectangular footprint surrounding an irregularly shaped map tile. All original DRG images were converted to grid to facilitate clipping, and were then converted back to TIFF to import into the geodatabase. For clipping purposes, feature masks (overlays) were created for each map tile by selecting the individual map tile from the master shapefile, and exporting to a new shapefile with the same name and extent as the map tile, for example, icity.shp. After each tiff was converted to grid, the associated shapefile overlay was opened in the same view. In order to view two different data simultaneously in ArcView® 3.2, it is necessary that each have the same spatial reference, as ArcView® 3.2 will not re-project on-the-fly. For this reason, the map tile shapefiles were re-projected to match the grids converted from TIFF data acquired from Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) or Montana State Library, Montana Natural Resources Information System (NRIS). Map tile shapefiles were re-projected to Transverse Mercator NAD 1983 to match the data downloaded from IDWR, and to Montana South State Plane NAD 1983 to match data downloaded from NRIS. Map tile grids were opened in ArcView® 3.2, along with the map tile shapefiles. Under 'Grid Tools', each grid image was clipped to reflect the 'Inside/Intersection Region' of the map tile masks ('selected features in theme'), and then saved as a new grid.

ADDED COLORMAP AND SPATIAL REFERENCE TO THE GRID FILES The process of clipping a grid has the unwanted side effect of removing the colormap associated with the original image, as well as the spatial reference. To circumvent the loss of the colormap, a new colormap was created for each map tile grid. The spatial reference lost during clipping was reassigned for each grid using ArcCatalog 'Define Projection' tool.

CONVERTED THE GRID FILES TO TIFF FILES Once clipped with a colormap added, each grid was opened in ArcMap 9, where the grids were converted to TIFF format by way of the Export Raster Data dialog: right-click on the grid name, 'Data' -> 'Export data' With the Layers coordinate system set to an Albers Equal Area (NAD 1927) projection, the Spatial Reference field in the Export Raster Data dialog was set to 'Data Frame (Current)' to produce a geoTIFF in the Albers projection.
