Figure 4. Detail of convex upward bedforms in sand dune on southwest end of profile. White to pale orange brown fine grained quartz rich sand and dark gray, very fine grained, resistant heavy mineral sand. Orange-brown laminataions and wavy banding are oxidized soil lamaellae formed by wetting and drying at the fluctuating margin of saturated and unsaturated soil moisture. Centimeter diameter tubes filled with homogenized white sand, heavy mineral sand, and oxide coated grains of the lamaellae are insect burrows that indicate periods of dry, thawed exposure. Nickel is about 0.8 inch in diameter. (See location on Figure 3).
