Abstract:
These data are the trackline from the seafloor photograph and video survey conducted September 2004 using the mini-SeaBOSS sampling system on the R/V Rafael in Boston Harbor and the harbor approaches, Massachusetts. This data accompanies approximately 170 km² of sidescan sonar data that were collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ship Whiting in 2000 and 2001 and reprocessed by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). |
Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

These data were collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Ocean Service (NOS) branch as part of their periodic hydrographic mapping for nautical charting. The raw datasets were provided by NOAA to the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Woods Hole, MA as part of a cooperative agreement to provide high resolution bathymetry and backscatter intensity maps and digital GIS information for resource management, scientific research, industry and the public.

Navigation was by differential GPS; positional accuracy to less than 10 m.
Geographic location was extracted from the survey vessel navigation string at a 1 second interval during post processing. MINI SeaBOSS sampler was lowered of Starboard side of survey vessel and lowered to seafloor. Vessel and sampler then drifted with wind and tide. Bottom Photographs, video fixes and location of the sediment sample is recorded as survey vessel navigation which could different by 2-5 meters depending on bottom currents, tide, and wind.

The text file of 1 second navigation fixes was parsed with an awk script to include only navigation fixes from when the sampling system was "on station." A written log was kept during surveying to mark the start and end time on each target station. The shapefile was created in ArcView 3.3 from the ASCII comma-delimited files of on station navigation fixes.
