Description:
Abstract:
This digital database, which was compiled from published data and new mapping, contains polygons depicting geologic units in portions of USGS 7.5-minute quadrangles Coyote Lake, Yermo, Alvord Mountain West, and Harvard Hill. The polygons were digitized and attributed from scanned and georeferenced source maps (see Process Description for details).
Purpose:
The mapping is part of a USGS project to investigate the spatial distribution of deposits linked to changes in climate, to provide framework geology for land use management (<http://deserts.wr.usgs.gov>), to understand the Quaternary tectonic history of the Mojave Desert, and to provide additional information on the history of Lake Manix, of which Coyote Lake is a sub-basin.
Supplemental_Information:
This feature class is a component of the geodatabase of the Surficial Geologic Map of a Calico Mountains Piedmont and Part of Coyote Lake, Mojave Desert, San Bernardino County, California

Feature classes included in the geodatabase of the Surficial Geologic Map of a Calico Mountains Piedmont and Part of Coyote Lake, Mojave Desert, San Bernardino County, California are: geologic units (clco_poly), geologic contacts and faults (clco_arc) and samples for ostracode analysis or geochronology (clco_samples).

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Geologic features were identified, mapped, digitized, and attributed by the principle investigator (Stephanie L. Dudash). The features were symbolized based on their attributes and plotted at 1:24,000-scale and compared visually with the original source maps.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
This database has been reviewed and is considered to be error-free. All features have attributes. Each line segment has a length and directionality that is appropriate for the geologic feature it depicts. No sliver polygons are present.
Completeness_Report:
This database is considered complete. All geologic features depicted on the source maps were digitized and attributed.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Most of the geologic features in this database are considered to be accurately located, and within +/- 5 meters of their actual location on the topographic base map. This accuracy diminishes in areas where the topography is either flat or very steep, or where the geologic feature of interest is difficult to discern. The 1:24,000 topographic maps and corresponding Digital Orthoquarter Quadrangles (DOQQs) that were used as the primary mapping base for this project were assumed to meet the National Map Accuracy Standard of +/- 12 meters.
Lineage:
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Geologic features (outlined in Supplemental Information) were identified on 1975 black and white, 1:24,000-scale aerial photographs; on 1978 black and white, 1:30,000-scale aerial photographs; and on 1983 color 1:24,000-scale aerial photographs. The features were digitzed on Digital Orthoquarter Quadrangles (DOQQs) by the principle investigator (Stephanie L. Dudash) in ArcMap 8.2©, 8.3© and 9.0© using the compilation aerial photographs as a guide. The digitizing scale was approximately 1:3,000. The original coverage in ArcMap 8.2© was converted to a geodatabase in 8.3©. Additional line work was created in the arc feature class, which was then constructed into polygons. Each feature class was symbolized based on attributes and plotted at 1:24,000-scale and compared to the source maps. Errors were edited as needed to achieve an error-free database.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Surficial geologic deposits commonly exist as thin (<2 m) veneers over older units. Where this relation is common, the unit designators are shown separated by a slash (/). Indicated first is the younger or overlying deposit. Qya/Qoa, for example, indicates an area where a veneer of young alluvial fan deposits overlies old alluvial fan deposits and Qya/Mzp indicates an area where a veneer of young alluvial fan deposits overlies Mesozoic plutonic rocks. The lateral extent of individual deposits is commonly so small that each deposit cannot be shown individually at the map scale. Such areas are indicated by deposits (representing more than 20% of the area) separated by a plus sign (+), with the most common deposit listed first. Thus, Qya + Qia indicates an area with both Qya and Qia deposits and that Qya is more common than Qia; other deposits in the area comprise less than 20%.
