Edited by James W. Dewey
U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2006-1185
This report is USGS Afghanistan Project Product No. 28

This web-site contains a report on the seismicity of Afghanistan and digital files with information on earthquakes that have been recorded in Afghanistan and the surrounding vicinity through mid-December 2004.

The Open-File Report text (of06-1185_508.pdf) and plates 1 (Plate1of2.pdf) and 2 (Plate2of2.pdf) are in the folder (sub-directory named "pdf."

The "earthquake catalogs" folder (sub-directory) contains digital files with information on locations and magnitudes of earthquakes of Afghanistan and vicinity and a file of felt reports and damage reports for many of the larger
earthquakes. Files in the "earthquake catalogs" folder are as follows:

"Macroseismic_effects.htm:" Described as the "Summary of Macroseismic Effects Reported for Afghanistan Earthquakes" in the Open-File Report. This file is described on pages 4 and 5 of the Open-File Report. The file is in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and may be viewed with web-browser software.
"Master_catalog.txt:" Described as the "Master Catalog of Afghanistan Earthquakes" in the Open-File Report. This file is documented in Chapter 2 of the Open-File Report. The file is a fixed-format text file with no headers. The file can be viewed using any standard word processing or text display utility.
"Sub-threshold_catalog.txt:" Described as the "Sub-Threshold Catalog of Afghanistan Earthquakes" in the Open-File Report. This file is documented in Chapter 2 of the Open-File Report. The file is a fixed-format text file with no headers. The file can be viewed using any standard word processing or text display utility.
"Summary_catalog.txt:" This file is documented on pages 3 and 4 of the Open- File Report. The file is a comma-delimited text file with headers. The file can be viewed in any standard word processing or text display utility and imported into many commercial computer software applications such as spreadsheet programs, database managers, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs.

The "plate_1_data.zip" archive contains metadata for plate 1 and shapefiles of epicenters plotted in plate 1.

"AfghanSeismicity.dbf," "AfghanSeismicity.prj," "AfghanSeismicity.sbn," "AfghanSeismicity.sbx," "AfghanSeismicity.shp," "AfghanSeismicity.shx:" Shapefiles and files associated with the Shapefiles for epicenters that are plotted in plate 1. These data may be imported into many GIS programs. However, these data are a subset of the data contained in the file"Summary_catalog.txt" ("earthquake catalogs" folder), and users interested in further exploration of the data are recommended to work with"Summary_catalog.txt."
"plate_1_metadata.txt:" Metadata for plate 1.

The "plate_2_data.zip" archive contains metadata for plate 2 and shapefiles of epicenters plotted in plate 2.

"IsoseismalEpicenters.dbf," "IsoseismalEpicenters.prj," "IsoseismalEpicenters.sbn," "IsoseismalEpicenters.sbx," "IsoseismalEpicenters.shp," "IsoseismalEpicenters.shx:" Shapefiles and files associated with the Shapefiles for epicenters that are plotted in plate 1. These data may be imported into many GIS programs. However, these data are a subset of the data contained in the file "Summary_catalog.txt" ("earthquake catalogs" folder), and users interested in further exploration of the data are recommended to work with "Summary_catalog.txt."
"plate_2_metadata.txt:" Metadata for plate 2.
