This is a Point data set. It contains the following vector data types (SDTS terminology):
Horizontal positions are specified in geographic coordinates, that is, latitude and longitude. Latitudes are given to the nearest .001. Longitudes are given to the nearest .001. Latitude and longitude values are specified in decimal degrees.
Credit belongs to the The Scripps Institution of Oceanography as the originators of the data, and the National Geophysical Data Center for the maintenance and accessibility of the data.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography compiled data on the geochemistry of marine ferromanganese nodules as part of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration, funded by the National Science Foundation. The files were discontinued in 1981. The SIO files contain data from approximately 1,500 samples collected at 800 locations worldwide. Data were abstracted from the literature, and other sources. The four files include data source, latitude/longitude, sampling device, water depth, nodule type, and weight percentages of selected elements. Files of additional elemental analyses, and bibliographic references are also included. The SIO data are also included in the NGDC marine minerals data base.
Frazer, J.Z., Freelander, N.A., Hawkins, D.L., and Scripps Institution of Oceanography, 1978, Sediment Data Bank Coding Instructions: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Reference No. 78-9.
Accuracy of each attribute is dependent on the accuracy of the lineage data.
Unknown. No navigational technique information is given in the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Ferromanganese Nodule Analysis File; therefore data have unknown original horizontal positional accuracy. Latitude and longitude are given in decimal degrees, to the thousanth of a degree.
Unknown.
Data within the SIO Mn Nodule Analysis File database were extracted from several reports.
